Has anyone rebuilt their turbos?
I'm just curious... w/ all the talk about oil seals going in the turbos.
I have a fair amount of oil in my intake pipes and so on.... I've had my turbos off and though about rebuilding them but didn't at that time. Mine are still running strong but I'm curious...

I hear you need 2 HT-12 rebuild kits, but...
What tools do you need?
Are their any videos?
How hard do you feel it is?
Hearing about these shops messing up turbo rebuilds makes me think it must not be that easy to do. Either that or shops are just doing crappy jobs *shrug*

I ported my own wastegate and that is as close as I think I will come to rebuilding them. You definately need some air tools. I didn't use any, because I don't have any, and it was the biggest PITA!!! Other than that they came apart easy enough and it was not that hard to do the work I needed done. IMO, next step is single for a more simplified project to work on.

I attempted a rebuild using turbo city's kit. It sucks ***. You don't really need air tools. Just a lot of PB blaster. I didn't have too much trouble cracking the turbos apart without air tools.

To port the wastegate, spray some paint over the wastegate door when it is closed. When you open it there will be an outline of where the door closes. Take a die-grinder and a carbide bit, and start grinding away, until you get within about a mm from the outline. That should do just fine.

No. I did not finish the rebuild. I did not like turbo city's kit. The carbon seal looked totally different than the stock one. Dave Disney used there cartridges when he replaced his motor a couple of years ago and they leaked really bad. I ended up picking up a used set of twins for $400 and installed them instead. I did not feel like installing a set of turbos that were probably going to leak.
