Has anyone painted 3rd brake light section of FD3?

I am considering painting my 3rd brake light
section of my FD3, the same color as the car.

Has anyone done that yet?
If you have can you post a picture.
So I can see how it would look.
Or an Opinion would be nice..

Thanks

i don't think it would look good at all, because the other taillights are built around that piece, they would still have that inside part that swoops up to join with the middle piece..

the painted middle would look out of place.

Anyways, I pulled a picture of a car from the gallery, and photochopped it. it was a really quick hackjob.

That looks fugly -- not ugly, but fugly. I think I saw a CYM once where they painted the entire brake light assembly yellow. It just didn't look right.

re: painting 3rd brake light

I've seen several cars painted this way and they actually look pretty good if done correctly (i.e, actually painting the inside edge of the tail light lenses as well).
Several of Peter Farrell's old cars had this done:

You can proably find many better pics on the web.

Is it technically illegal to eliminate the 3rd brake light?

Toad:

No, I don't think so... Everything I read in my state codes says you must have a minimum of 2 operating lights.

Isn't there some insurance companies that give minor discounts for a 3rd brake light?

maybe you should check out that tail light cover that RE makes,

i don't like it that much, but it would look better than your original idea

I think you'd want to mask the actual light but paint the section like the pics in the links I've provided.

The third light (CHMSL = Center High Mounted Stop Light) is there by FEDERAL (NHTSA) Mandate - the requirement won't appear in STATE codes.

I believe it is, as stated earlier by Max.

I know that if you have a brake light say inside the rear window, and buy a wing to put on the back of the car to potentially block the brake light, the wing MUST come equipped with a brake light to replace the one you covered. So by using that law, I believe that if you were to just remove the brake light from a car which originally had one, it would be illegal. But that is assuming the other people even know we have a brake light in the first place
