Hey all,

As some of you may know, Rotary Extreme has reopened after a few years, which is excellent news. However, Chuck no longer operates the business but a new management from Ben Meeker. For past couple of days, I spoke with the new owner via email and phone numerous times and real nice guy. Really friendly. My question is, have any of you ordered and installed the new monster VMOUNT they offer for the FD...specifically the single turbo VMIC kit? The size and core is different now and I want to make sure the new fit is excellent and not "tight" or "rubbing" against any surrounding parts. I know this is test/research for fitment should prove that it fits but I thought he would use the same template as the previous kit.

Chuck's old core (Spearco brand) size: 19.5x11.4.5
New core size (Garrett brand) size: 24x12x4.5

na, looked at it and looked at the cost to build one myself..

How big is your core size including the end tanks?

 

I went custom b/c nothing else was available. Fair amount of work. The IC is easy. Cake.
The hard part is the modified radiator, brackets for the rad and a/c, a/c hoses/pipinng, radiator hose routing, rad hoses etc.

The devil is always in the details...

 

^ where did you get that IC? i've been looking at doing my own custom one too and buying the rx7store v-mount radiator

also, i found that Bell ICs are really good and they make them custom to whatever you want.

 

The garrett cor is 18" wide. The endtanks are 3.5 on each side so the width is a total of 24" wide with the endtanks.


Turbonetics is the importer for spearco cores and when I went to order the original core they told me I needed to place an order of 20. Unfortunatly this was one of the items that turbonetics has scaled back on. They also stopped offering alot of turbo kits. The economy and cheap ebay products has hit everyone pretty hard.

I chose garrett because they are very reputable and readily available. The garret core is 18x12x4.5 vs the spearco core of 19.5x11x4.5. In overall area there is only .5 inch difference. The garrett supports a nominal 785hp rating and a bit over 1000 in drag/max application. The spearco says it supports upto 900. Also the garrett core is a bit less so I can pass the savings onto the community. After October 31st the new regular price will be listed on the website.

As soon as the new monster v-mount is done I will post pics on the website with the new redesigned endtanks for better flow. The endtanks on the monster vmount will be curved like the endtanks on the regular vmount. This minimizes turbulance inside the endtanks.

Also I have beefed up the radiator brackets baised on customer feed back. The aluminum radiator support brackets are thicker where it bolts to the towhooks. Also I supply new rubber groments on the post that goes into the radiator bracket holes. Also since the monster vmount is heavier then the regular vmount it also gets the thicker metal for the front support bracket.

As for using the same template, all the templates were recycled by the fabricator when Chuck closed the business. This is why I need to borrow an FD to do the test fit because I do not eyeball stuff from photos and send it to my customers and pray it works.

If there are any fitment issues I would want to see pictures of the issue and if it was an error on my part I will pay for shipping for the part back to me, modify it for free and pay the shipping back to you.

Thanks for the feedback, Ben. It was misunderstanding of the size measurements as you you've cleared it up on the phone earlier today.

 

My core is 12.5" long x 12" wide with an overall length of 30"... 4" thick with radius end-tanks.. 3" inlet/outlet. its a big boy.. biggest one i've seen yet.
It's got wiggins/adel ferrules on it now @ 3"

total cost was less than $500

 

That is deffinitly a huge core, I always admire people who venture on their own quest.

Was it 500 including the endtanks welded on? Also is you core itself 30" in length or is that with the endtanks.

anyways, its a nice vmount. But I agree with you, the devil was in getting the radiator and ac lines to properly fit, brackets here and there, getting the fans to work, all the little stuff. Its that little stuff that nickle and dimes us to death...kind of like a wife, girlfriend or our kids.....lol

 

You can definitely buy a core with end tanks at a reasonable price such as $500 or less depending on the setup. We spent about 8 hours getting the IC piping setup. Lots of cutting of various pieces.

 

Hey Roatary Extreme (Ben) I was always and still a big fan of Chuck products, even wen it was Rx7Fashion days. Anyway I went to your site and it does have nice products on it. However I notice the V-mount for the stock twins with the intakeu mention all need to buy as a packaged, cane we just buy the i/c alone? I am very good to fab my own brackets and moving stuff around.

I designed that one myself. I have never seen these vertical IC's with radii end-tanks. that air having to take a hard-90-bend bothered me and it makes the turbo work harder to push the air through and under vac the engine has to work a little harder to pull air through the IC. anyhow, $500 to design, build/roll and weld the thing together. the pipes were simple to make - i used T6061 Aluminum that is 4mm thick (stout stuff!!) which means i didn't need to roll the pipe-ends (ended up using different fittings in place of the a-typical hose-clamp and ic-hose).

mounting the fans, etc was really easy. i didn't make one single hole on my car to mount the kit. i say all in all, i spent $800 or about on the IC and radiator (double pass setup). the radiator was over $200 but its a 3-core deal.

well thats an awsome savings, it goes to show how much you can save if you know how to do stuff yourself. I do not weld aluminum so unfortunately that gets added to the cost. All hoses used are silicon 3 ply and the brackets are all aluminum too.

also the garrett core and koyo radiator are a little expensive too, but i want to provide a very nice quality kit.

good job on your vmount, credit is given where credit is due.
