Has anyone legitly painted their tan plastics?
Has anyone legitly painted their tan plastics?
The car is currently stripped, i'm converting the car to a dark blue/black. I definatly want to go black interior now (wish I had these plans when i bought it
)
I'm wondering, I should just sand down all the tan plastics; prime and paint with the black that will be covering my car; top it off with 2 coats of clear.
I can buy some black door panels and carpet, only other thing i have to worry about is the headliner.
Oh... just for some eye candy or lack there of:

Talk to a couple places that restore or do custom car interiors and see what they say. I've seen several cars where the interior was sprayed and it didn't look right at all. Sanding would just knock down the texture on the panel. If your going to do it, at least get them dyed. I'm sure there are some posts on here documenting that.
I think most here would install the factory black parts. The key is getting them all in the condition you want.

i see you took out the ls1 and now putting a rotary in it...haha j/k j/k
are you actually painting the interior with car paint or are you just trying to make it look like stock black interior?

I dont even remember what the stock black interior looks like; i'm just trying to make it black haha.
I wouldnt mind converting pieces to the stock black but they are so damn hard to find not to mention expensive; but that really hasnt stopped me with anything yet on this project so far.
If i sand them i lose the texture, but not sure thats all bad the plastics would just be smooth. If I screw them up... oh well? The tan ones arent worth that much anyway and I can just acquire black pieces when they come available? I'm not sure because i've never done it, but they would have the feel of the carbon fiber replacement pieces that you buy; smooth like that except they would be black instead of the carbon fiber look.
Also that is a LS2 over there with a rather large cam.
Oh to answer your question; i'd sand down the texture, rought it up a bit with a fine sand paper. Prime it, then probably put 2 coats of quality black paint, then followed by 2-3 coats of clear.
It would be like the equivalent of painting the front chin spoiler. The clear would prevent noticable scratches so the tan wouldnt show up. Am i just imagining this in my mind? I'm pretty sure it will work.

Don't sand textured plastic. There are special paints/dyes for plastic that you can find in rattle can form. There are also adhesion additives or prep sprays that can help. In my experience the biggest problem is getting them clean enough during prep. Most have had silicone preservatives like Armorall etc. used on them and if ANY is left behind, it causes issues...fisheyes in the finish and it won't stick.
I think your best bet is to look for black interior pieces. Check the Parts for Sale section. I have no connection with the seller....but this guy has most of them.....possibly even the head liner. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=721405 IMO, even well used factory black interior plastics will look better than re-dyed ones.

If you dont add some sort of protection to the paint it will eventualy chip in certain areas that are dinged/scratched and the tan will show through. You may beable to get away with it painting a black dash, but not on a tan piece of plastic. It would look ok off the start but you would have to touch it up a lot.
i have some links for this stuff. one of them is used for carpet dying, i have a tan and am converting it to black, the other is for interior trim pieces, lmk if any of them help

Here's a good link of somebody painting them from tan to black. I'm gonna use the same paint. It turned out great.

^ Wow that does look great; I may try that and put some clear on one of the bolt covers for the seats; (ones you cant really see). Just to try it out and see how it looks. Not because I want it glossy; just would be nice to get a little more protection on there.
