Half Heigh pop up with Sylvania X1010 HID

I got tired of not having enough light output even with a CATZ MSX driving light and 85watt PIAA bulb. Saw this on a Honda so figured I'd squeeze it into my half-height popup. $420.00 direct from Sylvania.

Initially, it was brighter than my CATZ driving lights but it just didn't impress me. I noted that the HID bulb had a cover that covered 75% of the bulb. I removed it and it's amazing .... I expected to have a lot of glare but there wasn't enough to bother other drivers and the output was amazing.

Unfortunately, I don't have high beam now. This is only an experiment as I want to get the RX7 even kit with Hella 90mm HID and high beam for a street legal looking headlight.

pomanferrari,

Since the pictures are on your local PC, no one else will be able to see the pictures. Try to attach them to the message at the bottom where it says "Attach file:".

This is the beam pattern in my garage. Note that this is with the camera flash going off (It's a Minolta Damn Image 2300).

Can you see them now? My files are too big to be attached.

Nope. You see, your image path is this:

file:///F:/Documents%20and%20Settings/ADMINISTRATOR/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/RX7%20PICS/hid%20on.JPG

You see, it points to an "F:" drive. Well, on your local PC, that's where you have your pictures. On the internet, each PC reads that link pointing to their own PC where the pictures don't exist so nothing shows up.

If you want to post the pictures, PM me and I can shrink them for you.

Ok, I used PhotoImpact to reduce the 1 meg pictures to a more manageable 100K or less.

Sorry for the inconvenience folks. I don't know how people can post multiple pictures even though I did a search ....

Any way here goes the first one that shows a comparison b/w ligh withe the internal cover and light w/o the internal cover.

This one shows the beam pattern. It's very wide with a sharp cut off.

Remember, I'm just experimenting. Once the RX7even kit is for sale with HID, these bad boys are going to replace the CATZ MSX.

Built a metal bracket that attaches to the housing pod at a different location. Then attached the articulated arm (the one that hooks to the motor) to this metal bracket.

I'm not happy with this light setup:

1. the beam pattern is not good enough even for a driving light *it's slightly better than stock but then my mag flashlight is better than stock*

2. Because of the sucky *** beam pattern, when you mount the thing half-height, the beam pattern is even worse. I went back to full height.

3. This is way too much experimenting to make it worth my time. So I have not done anything since last year.
It's not a finished product in any case.

4. I'm waiting for rotary extreme to come out with the 2/3 height dual Hellla 90mm HID set up for $1250.
