Great job on the car man , it looks awesome and when you get it all set up its going to be a beast. The paint you used was fine man , I own/run a paint/bodyshop and you can get great results with a cheaper line of paint , it all depends on your prep/finish work . Paint your car with the most expensive paint you can find over crappy prep work and it will go to **** in 3 months. You can also take a mediocre looking paint job, wet sand it and buff it and come out with something that looks way better as long as you have enough paint to work with. As far as being able to tell its a crappy paint job from the pics ...PALEESE!!! Props on the V8 , its the best reliability mod you could do to a Rx7 , flame on haters!!

i mean dont get me wrong, im not downing anything, but if your going to spend that much on your motor. why not on the whole car to make it better than most, just like your power?

me alone, im going to spend 2k on a paint job very soon(i am very low on cash flow), i dont see that being alot for a paint job, considering some are over 5k... it just seems like your pulling some strings here.
Here's the thing...... If I were to spend money on someone painting my car I would spend at least $5000 for a good job. A $2000 paint job just isn't gonna cut it, well maybe for just a regular job. I'm willing to bet my $400 paint job is going to look better than your $2000. So it's not about me being too cheap to spend the $2000 for a paint job. It's about me being confident enough that I can produce better results than a regular shop can. I spent a total of what, 75hrs by myself, and probably another 25hrs on people helping me. Tell me a $2000 paint job will have them spending that much time on your car I don't think so. This is more of a learning experience more than anything anyways. I'm planning to paint my car again next year, this time show quality!!

Exactly what my friend told me. It's not about the price you pay for supplies. If you do a poor job of prepping and lay on some expensive *** paint, it's still gonna look like crap. If you prep the hell out of your car and lay on cheap *** paint, you'll still get good results. It's all about the prep and how many hours you put into it. The paint cost comes second.

here are some more pics of the paint. Here you can really see the shine of the rear fender. The doors aren't as shiny cause I'm in the middle of polishing. The sideskirts are very crappy I painted them last year. Let me just tell you this, the quality of the paint gun really makes a difference

Hey John when you get new rims you can give those crappy GT-C's to me if you want, I am sure I could find a use for them . . . . . .

Car looks good!!

Paint prep is almost everything, the job looks good John.

The problem with cheaper paint is that a few years later you might notice some less expensive paints just go away...

damn thats awsome good job on the paint i woudlnt have the ballz to do it myself and i'm sure that it wouldnt come out looking that way. that is gonna be sick Good luck on getting traction. oh and btw i'd look at running some 17x11's so you can put some 315 Nitto Drag radials on there it might help with traction, just a thought tho. i'm going the Ls1 route but that lt1 TT would put me to shame. and screw the v8 haters just laugh as your engine lasts 100,000 miles when they have to replace thiers in 30,000 (under alot of power that is).

I wasn't too worried about having the paint last more than a year. This was my first paint job ever and I more or less just wanted it to be all one color The end results were alot more than I ever wanted. You're right though, cheaper paints tend to fade quicker. Though Nason isn't the cheapest paint, it's right there with the lower budget paints. Like I said, next year is a whole different story. I'm thinking of changing the color, but that takes probably twice the labor (to do it right).

V8 haters? I hardly even hear of them anymore, haha!!

I think I'm going to have traction problems with any tire I have on, so I might as well look good while I burn em off, hehe. I'm gonna have a pair of extra wheels mounted on slicks for race days.

Good luck with the LS1 install. I think you're gonna find more help online then you could ever imagine. There are more and more people doing the LS1 installs now and most of them are really cool guys who love to help. I think there are still just a few of us that stayed with the LT1.

I'll trade you crap for crap!! My wheels for your bumper!! Oh damn, low blow, sorry Justus

I think most people here are DIYers. But when it comes to painting, especially a whole car, people tend to never even attempt it, and go strait to a pro. I was gonna bring mine to a pro but after he quoted me something like $4000, and that was with me helping with the prep, I decided to give painting a shot

The paint looks pretty good to me. The twin turbo LT-1 is what makes me drool, though. That's going to be one hell of a fun car. Good luck with the rest of the project -- I look forward to reading about your first drive.

What paint gun did you use? Was it a gravity feed one?

Thanks Max. I'll look forward to writing about my first drive

t-von, I first used a cheap gravity hvlp I bought and it did ok, not perfect though. This new gun we used is a Devilbliss Finishline III, I think that's how it's spelled. Though not the best gun, I was told the quality compares to most the high dollar turbine guns.

LT1-7: I think, that even with my qualifying post, that my comments regarding your paint have been misunderstood. You are right, it is probably as good or better than getting a $2k paint job...I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing you or anything -- in fact the job is pretty fricking impressive for DIY! I think you understand exactly where I'm coming from, considering your later comments in the thread.

As I said before, the engine fabrication looks amazing. Good luck with your project!

No problem, I do understand sometimes we type faster than we think and things just don't come out right.

Don't get me wrong, there are some blemishes on the car I'm not proud of. You can't see it in pics, so I'm not gonna go out of my way to show them Overall, even with the blemishes, I think I have a better paint job than some off the stuff I see in car shows. I'm curious to see how long it'll last that way. Probably won't keep it long enough to find out

If you came on here and said "Check out my new $8k paint job" - and posted the same pics people would be telling you how phenomenal that paint is.

It looks damn good to me - and there is nobody who will prep and care for your car more than you will.

Screw all the paint and V8 haters... they're full of it.

Great job.
Tell me, If you re-paint the car, will you have to strip it to the metal ?
Maybe some body shop guys can chime in.
