Ive always heard that torque wins races? Any enlightenment on that aspect would certainly be appreciated.

How is the comparative weight distribution between the 2 setups.

Should be a lot of fun regardless of outcome!

They should both me very close to 50/50.
The LS2 FD car might actually had a tad more over the rear wheels as compared to the 13B FD.

"How is the comparative weight distribution between the 2 setups."

both cars will be weighed on my scales this week. rear weight wins on a road course w a front engined rear drive car...

to that end, each car has a rear mounted battery, no PS or AC.

should you wish more DUAL PURPOSE chassis/setup info today visit the Suspension section and read post one of my thread entitled: "Howard Coleman's chassis/suspension setup for the FD."

Both cars have coilovers so if it's possible corner balance them.

subscribed.

I've been waiting for a thread like this ever since I heard about a LS1 FD. Howard, I'm glad to see it's you taking it on in your typical scientific approach. I'm also anxious to hear your impressions of driving a LS1 FD on the track.

now that you've got us all on the end of our seats, when is the first track day?

+1

Supposedly, all things being equal, the car with more useable/tractable torque "under the curve" should win . . .

i will have an inital idea as to timing early next week.

certain items need to be obtained such as the NTO3+M wheels, tires aren't a problem, a Feed type 2 wing which i will modify, a set of Tein coil overs w a particular spring rate.

i will not do the Shootout without equal setups. i did contact BHF (track) and they will be getting back to me.

Howard, will you attempt to handicap the power of one of the cars if it turns out one has a massive dyno advantage? Or is that the point

Normally I would have my money on the LS2 due to the torque factor, but after seeing an nicely prepped 2nd gen beat a gt V8 supercar I may put my money on the Rotary, but who know till it happen....

Howard, this is a wonderfull thing you are doing....Can't wait for the results...

Not necessarily true. A lot depends on the circuit you're running on, and whether it matches up well with the gearing and power characteristics of the engine.

If the course is a circuit with lots of fast flowing turns with no slow sharp-angled bends where you would dip into the lower rpms, torque won't really help you much.

Power "under the curve" is more aptly applied to the street, where you spend more time accelerating from lower/midrange rpm.

Anyway, back on topic. To me, it will be far more interesting to see Howard's subjective comments on the handling of the two cars rather than just looking at the lap times to see which car "won".

^Yep it will be interesting to hear about the both the subjective comments as well as the overall results.

Would be cool if the event is being datalogged? That might be interesting to look at the differences that was as well.

i am hoping to have the MSD GPS datalogger onboard both cars. it will go a long way to explaining the lap times.

I was wondering if there are any plans of vidoes of this interesting event ala DAMIAN's excellent road race vidoes.

Maybe a car mag or Mazda might be willing to tape the event.

I can always dream.

If I wasn't retired and broke I'd love to drive out and be a spectator.

Anyone that has been watching the Rolex Grand Am series has seen this played out over the past 2 years with the Speed Source RX-8's and the Porsches, and the Pontiac GXPR this year.

The same is likely to hold true with comparison between a V8 RX7 and an Rotary RX7.

Hey guys, thanks for your perspectives and information links regarding my questions.

I do have another question to toss out for you.

My Innovate systems datalogger only allows collection of datasets for 6 functions at a time; A/F ratio and five other systems of my choice.

Is the datalogger you mentioned all encompassing for all of the cars functions and systems or are there only specific data sets that can be created and monitored with it. If so, which systems would you monitor, ie. RPM, TPS, coolant temp, intake air temp etc.
