guaging intrest ac relocation to shifter pannel

Would people be interested in having the ac controlls relocated to the shifter pannel and having guage cut outs or a pfc commander display put in its place. It will be labor intensive but I have all the tools needed. I saw a guy in the third gen parts forum stating he payed 1300 and was like I could do it for way less. I can have them professionaly painted for a very resonable price too. just guaging intrest and if there is enough I'll do it to mine and take pics. Mike

Someone here did the mod for a couple hundred a few months back. The one in the parts section was $1300 because they were BRAND NEW panels form Mazda, with the relocation, and a nice coat of paint.

Mdessouki, if you could produce a sample with pics that might gather more interest. What kinda price you think the relocation would go for?

I dont want it done to mine, I just thought I could do it to make a little money on the side.
It all depends on how much time it takes and the finish requested. I would probably do it for arround 300 with a standard black interior finish. I will use/ have been using the interior paint recomended by sherwin willams and their plastic adhesion promoter. The major problem is I sold my commander and would not want to buy a new one unless there was a decent amont of intrest.

Well I would definitely pay $300 to have the commander moved to where the ac controls are and the ac stuff to the shifter area. The only thing is I have a carbon fiber dash kit installed on the ac panel...Do you have any suggestions around that. That part couldn't be painted...you'd just need to cut the carbon fiber along with the panel and make it look good...I don't think its that possible actually.

ok there seems to be intrest. I will do it to mine first. I will make the ac pannel flat with no guage holes of commander holes, That will be the last step anyways. You will be able to see the quality of the shifter pannel though. THe cut-out will be added at the customers request. One I make sure I want to do this who do I have to talk to on the forum to get it approved?

I jsut spent 65 on materials and quite a few hours on refinishing mine so I'll see If I can find some used. It may be less depending on how labor intensive this is. Mike

I worked in collison repair for 6 years. This is nothing. I will do one first to show pics. I recently broke my guage hood and repaired it because it was 320 new. Ill post some pics of that just to show kind of what the process is like. Mike

I just saw he was charging 650. thats still a lot but I shoud see what its going to take to do before run my mout off. I however will not crack apart a commander because I dont do wiring. I can place it in the ac pannel area in one complete peice. Mike

Look forward to seeing some pics especially since you are planning to mount the whole commander unit back there. Are you positive it will fit?

Also, do you happen to know anyone who could cover the panels in CF once you are done(instead of painting them)???

mark koch was on the forum sevral years ago. He did great work. Once I get one done with some finished pics Ill send him a email and see if he is still covering things in cf.

I also found a local guy who im giving a great deal on a mazdaspeed hood who is willing to let me borrow his commander.

ok I need to know from some one serious what they would like relocated from the ac pannel to the shifter pannel, I will move all the ac controlls but what about the recycle switch (the carpet under it will have to be cut and maybe even dent the tranny tunnel), hazard, light dimmer (no way to fit it in the shifter pannel but I can shave the hole if wanted). I will build this first set for somone and if thy do not like the quality they have no obligation to purchase.

If you want the pfc in there it will be converted to a single din.

if you do the relocation right...you don't have to dent the tyranny...i thought, i had to dent my tyranny tunnel but i didn't have to and it fits perfectly...it should fit without any modifications..

I would definitely be interested for that price.

Tinfan82 how did you get it to fit? I remember a while back you were posting that you couldn't get your shifter panel to fit.

All I had to do was bend the wires on the back of the fan power switch outwards...another problem was the the a/c button was too long...to solve this problem, just had to chip a piece of plastic where the center console is screwed down to the tyranny tunnel(hard to describe)...PROBLEM SOLVED....

Im going to do mine this weekend if I can get over this flu bug I caught. I going to leave it a double din and the only thing I'll leave is th hazard and dimmer switch. I'll post pics so you can see how it turns out. Im going to try to keep cost down but do not want to let quality suffer. Mike
