can they be painted? ive heard that alum. doesnt take well to paint

u can paint alluminun just as easy as any other metal. prep work is the biggest party of painting any kind of material.
make sure its clean of oil and residue,sand it, prime it, then paint

They are alloy. Easy way to tell is to stick a magnet on them. If magnet sticks steel, if it falls off Alloy. (sorry we call it alloy in NZ)
