The reason I was asking was becuase i got a quote for a brand new stock one at NZ$100 which is like $70 US, is this a standard price all round or can I get aftermarket cheaper with the same performance??

I've never really seen any advantage to the Mazda filter over, say, a good Purolator filter from a parts store. Typical US price for a fuel filter is $25-30 or so.
I think the Mazda filter comes with the mounting bracket, whereas the aftermarket filter does not. But, I've yet to see a situation where the stock bracket wasn't usable or something.

Often times the OEM filters are made by companies who specialize in making filters, such as Bosch or Purolator. I'm 100% certain that Subaru oil and fuel filters are made by Purolator. I've heard rumors that the Mazda filters are also Purolator units, but I'm not sure of that. One thing I can guarantee you is that Mazda did not manufacture their fuel filters in-house, that would be a big waste of resources.
