i think the viper would win, might be pretty close though..considering all the torque the viper has, that thing will pull like a ****..but also the power to weight ratio on both, its hard to say.. then it depends on the driver, so all in all its hard to say who would win...

the viper is a torque monster, i say race him from a launch, he'll be spinning tires in 1st forever (better hope he cant drive), you will take him no prob..(if you're a good driver)..

are you racing for fun or for money?

why would even consider racing him on the highway? thats like handing him the win already..

People do this all the time. They always post without actually reading the initial post by just saying what everyone else says. Like everyone was telling him to upgrade his intercooler, and that he cant pull a lot of boost off stock intercooler. If my eyes read correctly, it says that he has an apexi gt spec. If im not mistaken, that would be a front mount intercooler. If im wrong then retract my prior statement. I think you can take the viper, they arent that fast. Make sure you race him from a dig. From a roll he will more then likely win due to the insane amount of torque.

I raced a GTS when I had the twins (sequential) and 330hp at the rear wheels (ages ago!) and lost by about two car lengths. I had a better launch. From a roll (at the right speed) I could get a jump on him but he would pull me back in slowly. My car weighed in at 2650 or so then.

nope.
no proves, but if he is gonna to race a viper on a straight line, there is no chance winning already, so winning a viper sideways and hope the driver can drive is a better bet!

I've driven a Viper or two on the drag strip and autocross course, and I have a few friends that road race them. Here are my experiences:

1) The car is exceptionally easy to launch (if you know how). All you have to do is rev it up to about 1700 RPM, drop the clutch and go. It'll produce light wheelspin, a mild bog, and very quick and repeatable launches. Torque is always your friend -- predictable and dependable.

2) Stock Vipers can't be shifted very quickly. The Tremec is a rather crude box, and the stock flywheel weighs a ton. These combine to force "granny shifts" -- especially in the 2 - 3 upchange.

3) The motor has all the advertised power, and more. Recent testing by Motor Trend (I think it was) comparing the Viper's RWHP to it's advertised power indicated the power ratings are very conservative.

4) Contrary to the way the car looks, it drives like a much smaller machine. It is very agile. It has excellent suspension dynamics, with aggressive camber gain. If the car has an achilles heel for racing use, it's the brakes. But then this can be said for most street cars put on a road course. I'm not a Viper lover -- I only write this to stress that you won't run away from a Viper on a curvy road either.

The car is a beast, but it's a beast that can dance with the best of 'em. It didn't achieve multiple LeMans wins by accident.

A have a couple friends with vipers. One of my buddies owns a 97 GTS. One cool summer night, a while ago (years) we decided to go at it. My mods at the time were; Dp, cat back, purple computer set to 14 psi but it would drop to 12psi, cold ar intake. We went from a roll 20, 35,and 70 mph. I could SLOWLY pull him every time (about a car from 35 to 100). We then went from a light, very close but I would always slowly pull him. We switched drivers, same results.

Brooks now owns a Viper GTS...

Man, this topic sure did get a lot of attention fast! how come whenever I post something informative and technical not 1/5 as many people jump on

Anyways, speaking of technical, I'm not seeing very many technical statements being made...so far the best one I've seen is this:
"The motor has all the advertised power, and more. Recent testing by Motor Trend (I think it was) comparing the Viper's RWHP to it's advertised power indicated the power ratings are very conservative."
That would mean that comparing flywheel hp to flywheel hp is pointless and therefore pretty much stomps out the hope I had of beating it. From the figures I generated (assuming power lost through drivetrain was the same) I would make 375hp at the fly which is a bit more compared to the viper's 450 factoring in weight. The only reason I mentioned the intake and everything is to show there was no bottleneck in my air tract, it's incredible how much power people think they gain from a mp...all they're doing is removing the bottleneck, all that power was allready there.

In regards to the intercooler comments, I don't plan on running more than 12psi of boost, and it won't be for long, I was more concerned with the fuel pump. stock injectors should be fine if I run them at %90 for a short while.

Some people have this notion that they've lost something if they don't win a race. I could seriously care less if I lose; I'm more into driving speed around a track anyways, stomping on the gas takes little skill. It will be a very nice video though and even sweeter when I come back and stomp his *** with an upgraded single!

Ohh, and yes, we are betting....a tank of gas, the only catch is he has to race me in his STOCK 350z as well, so the bets will ofcourse cancel out.

My old roommate had a 371rwhp FD and a Viper GTS at the same time. He raced them on the highway once with his friend at the wheel of the GTS. He said the viper was slightly faster from 30-90 but after that the rx7 cought it and started pulling away.

Bear in mind this is second hand information.

Shouldn't this be in the kill section?

It's not a kill...yet....is it CCarlisi? I would immagine aerodynamics came into play at those speeds.
If a viper can put down 420-430rwhp it'll be faster, I was assuming it had more of a drivetrain loss than that...perhaps the flywheel hp is rated lower than it should be.

I raced several vipers in my lifetime. The first one was when I had twins, intake, full exhaust, and a tuned PFS piggyback. I was running 12 psi and got killed.

The second encounter was with my T04s and all the goodies to go with, 12 psi untuned, new PFC - race was alot, a whole lot closer but I lost.

Third race was at 16.5 psi, tuned running 18degrees of advancement, all of the goodies to support. The viper GTS did not know what happened

im telling you guy, race him in the 1/4.. just hope you can drive and he cant, or even he he could too, you'll have a better chance in the 1/4.. believe me..

racing him on the highway is calling a quits already..(with the mods you stated)

vipers are quick, their torque is amazing and their 3rd gear is where they'll get you..

as for filming it, find someone with a jeep. get them way ahead of you and have them floor it. have someone standing up in the jeep to catch the race as you blow by, at which point he can turn around and get the 100+mph footage as well. with a camera operator that isnt a moron and a jeep doing 85 or so, using zoom, you should be able to catch everything from a 40-punch to about 130 on film. good luck and have fun!

p.s. - this shot would look CRAZY if done in a 3 lane wide tunnel that's well lit but at night time with the cars lights on and no traffic around.
