going away to school, car is staying at home..

So I'm leaving for school tomorrow and my FD is stayin back. I live in south jersey and I go to university of maryland so it isn't like I can come home on the weekends and start it. Now I'm a little weary of this, but my mom offered to start the car, and let it get to idle every sunday for me. I'm going to take her up on the offer I think, assuming she watches me start the car tonight and knows what the hell she is doing.

My question is, every sunday should be more than enough for the car correct? or should I have her do it 2 times a week?

Thanks.

-Nick

i believe once a week will be enough to keep it running right. just have her check the main fluids every couple weeks. like oil and break, power steering. and make sure there is no leeks, and everything should be fine

haha I'll have to come home every couple weeks and do that. This is my mom we're talking about here, I doubt she would even know what oil looked like.

I'm in the same boat. Just bought my 2nd FD and it'll sit in my garage for a year before I get back.

what you might consider doing is putting in a turbo timer. I did that for my car set it for 10 mins and let it idle and then it shuts itself off.

This might be something for the future. What I am concerned about now is will starting it once every sunday good enough for the car to be healthy when i come back for spring break or should it be done more

Once a week is overkill. Once a month is plenty.

Leaving it idling for abit each week will do it more damage than good - not unless someone takes it out for a good run to get everything heated up properly. After all, you want to get the nasty combustion byproducts out of the oil...

What I would do is hook up the trickle charger, put some fuel stabiliser into the petrol and just leave the car. Some people would suggest to either increase the tyre pressure or put the car on stands to avoid having the tyres go egg-shaped.

Once you're back to resurrect the car, take out the EGI fuse and crank it until you've got proper oil pressure showing. You basically want to get the oil circulating properly before firing it up.

I left my FD for over a year stood and it fired up first time.

How long will it be inbetween you coming home from school etc?... Or put it another way whats the maximum length of time that the car will be stood still?

+1

I store mine in the winter (4-5 months). I have had no problems at all once I go to start it again after storage.

It is not good to let a rotary engine sit for extended lengths of time without starting them, or putting some oil in the engine and turning it over by hand. I let my first gen sit for the winter and it lunched an apex seal. When I took it in to be looked at, the mechanic explained that if you let them set for too long (unlubricated) the apex seals can get stuck in the position that they are in, then when you try and start the engine they break the apex seal.
I start all of mine up once a month and let them warm all the way up.

Once a month is fine. Man didn't you just get this car? She'll get lonely!
