Gordon road raced?

To set the record straight, I don't believe Gordon ever made it to a race track with his FD, as far as I know. But he did have intentions of doing so.
When the car was finally "finished" and running "right", he sold it and bought a 911. I am not really sure of the exact reason behind that but I believe some of the motivation was financial.

I own the car now..... The interior definately is not for everyone. Thanks Gordon for all the work done to the car....I'm enjoying it. I have changed it some since I have bought it. Mostly exterior and engine mods, EMS stuff like that.

I do not want to speak for Gordon, but since he's a friend of mine and no longer browses the board I'm going to throw in my 2 cents.

Basically he got sick of owning a project car. The interior/overhaul project was a total disaster for him. It was a combination of long delays, deteriorating relationships with the venders he relied on, high cost, and mediocre results. For the last few years he owned the car it was not drivable the vast majority of the time.

He decided to replace the FD with a 1994 911 turbo (the last air cooled RWD turbo), which he believed would be a more dependable daily driver. Ironically the 911 turned out to be a problem child from day 1. It is currently in the shop with a broken widget that looks like the stock fd wg actuator, but costs $1480.

I know he brought the FD to VIR, but is quick to admit he is not really a track guy. However, he has a 1hr+ commute and drives like an absolute lunatic from door to door. I've ridden shotgun with him a few times and now do my best to avoid it.

Def. not laughing AT him, just at the way you phrased it. I know Mazda charges an arm and a leg for parts, but I'd never expect Porsche to be cheaper. Heck, Porsche prob signs up for your unborn children...

I definitely give a huge thumbs up to the incredible amount of work that went into the setup. BUT, I'm surpised to see I'm not the only one who thought it looked horrible. Ppl always drooled over it, and as to not disrespect, I always stayed quiet. But inside I was always wondering "OMG, are these ppl freakin blind?" Props to the work tho (again).

Dave, if your FD turns out looking even remotely like that, you'll be handing over that pink slip, not racing for it Oh, and as a mod, you should know better... this belongs in the Interior/Exterior/Audio section......

Weird, but it sounds like he had more trouble with KDR than he did with PFS as far as engines go. What was the difference? KDR actually replace/rebuild the engines that they tried to tune and blew up?

To answer your question.......yes, on your KDR question.
As far as PFS goes, the whole lawsuit thing was over a supposed "engine swap" instead of a new replacement.
Unlike KDR, PFS has a great "inhouse" tuner, who (I believe) is majority owner of the new shop in Fredrick, Md.

Ernie, am I correct in getting the sense that tuning an FD w/ mods was crude at best until not too long ago, w/ the advent of new EMS' like the PFC etc? And hence the various motor eater ECUs/reflashes, and all the blown engines? Or is it just that tuners themselves have gotten better...or both?

What I am working on will differ in a few ways. First off I am not paying someone to do it for me like Gordo did. I am a hobbiest in the true sense in that I do everything to my car with my own two hands aside from the efi tuning. Paint, parts, install, work, whatever. I did it. Also I will not be making a shoddy looking dash with gauges just dropped in. Not that what I am going to do will be blazin trails but it will be alot nicer in my opinion. I have already re upholstered most of my interior, new seat skins, I did the center console in leather along with the A pillar covers. The dash and instrument panels were next in line. I just wanted to see these pics of Gordons stuff to compare and what not. Like I mentioned to you Rami when I saw you this afternoon. I will have some new interior product to offer to the forum members in the near future.

Yes I am aware that this was more of an interior modifictaion question and not a technical question but I really didnt think anyone would care. I also didn't think that the young crowd in that area would even know who I was talking about.

Dave is being modest guys...his ish WILL be blazin trails. I have yet to see any work Dave does that is even slightly mediocre. I think you've all seen his polish work, and I remember fixing my hair in his engine bay last meet (can you say BLING?!) Some of you have seen his car. I've seen those reupholstered seats and interior, and I remember being duly impressed and even commenting on how good they looked. So w/o seeing what Dave's gonna do, I can still vouch that his work will be 100% Can't wait to see it

I like being able to fit more guages on the dash but I'm not sure about the rest, maybe it IS the color. If anyone can tell me where to get this dash or one like it, or a better one, along with the dash set that relocates the HVAC controls to center panel under the arm, I would appreciate it. I'm trying to get all my guages mounted where it's as clean as possible and not even mounted on the A-pillar and not on the dash. So if anyone can help. Thanks. By the way, didn't mean to bogart the discussion from the original poster, sorry.

It's all custom, I believe. But I think I have seen some kind of product that is supposed to help relocate the HVAC controls.

I don't like having gauges mounted all over, either. My solution was to put an analog boost gauge in the RE steering column pod and replace the stock OP and WT gauges in the dash with some dual digital gauges: http://maxcooper.com/rx7/how-to/spa_gauges/index.html

I always think that stock looks the best..... but I wish we had some lexus like guages where its not a bulb but a florecent light~~~

I completely agree with bricke, it looks really out of place, i think i t would look good if the background of the tachometer and speedometer region was black and just the center console was that greyish color, along with some more grey accents in the car; however i will admit that whoever did the job did a great job; also, that looks really classy max (like ur name )

I think Gordon was off a bit on the guages and grey-colored plastic bits, but on most everything else, it looks awfully nice... and I like how he tried to do something upscale, perhaps the way the car would have come if it had cost more, rather than putting LCD TV's in the back of the F%@#ing headrests, and a gameboy in there.

Throw max's converted guage setup in there with black panels in there, and take off that silly-looking efini emblem on the console, and it's right on.

Peter, you mean you won't join me for a quick game of GT4 on my PS2 mounted in the bins? (I swear I'm jokin LOL). I'm actually one of those rare (younger) guys who HATES seeing screens and stuff like that in cars. My car isn't a freakin movie theater. I'm there to DRIVE it, not WATCH in it. Audio is where I draw the line...want some good music to kick it to while I cruise...
