An fd was my first sports car... From their I moved on to a 500hp supra to a 450hp evo to a twin turbo 350z to a nos charged euro r.. I have to say the fd was the best in terms of styling in my opinion and the no nonsense driving position says that it's a true spots car... I have returned to the fd and have just bought a 2002 spirit r type A... It took me 7 months to get it running the way I wanted to but it is the most amazing car I have ever had and if I had to do it all over again I will...

Wouldn't trade it for any other car within financial reason. I am fortunate to work in the aftermarket auto-accessory industry, and get to drive many of the "tuner cars" that are available. I can say that there are few that are as much fun to drive or have as much character and personality as a 7. So I guess I would take the plunge again....oh wait I did...cause now I have two...lol.

I don't want the hassle and the hit on mpg. Having a simple engine keeps keeps my life simple for maintenance and everyday use.

It's okay though, having premium package ( the real thick leather), cold weather package, awd, ambient lighting and other packages that I have on my 525xi allows me to enjoy the car without needing those bigger engines. Sounds like you've never been a BMW owner.

Besides, I can see how you can have that misconception. Most people get the weaker engine because its cheaper, and dont load the car up with options in order to get into a BMW without costing a complete arm and a leg. Therefore the lower designation on the last two numbers must mean its a barebones car.
Actually had an 03 Merc 230 komp and an 04 M3, they were my ex's, we had them for a short time because they were very boring. We had the Merc for roughly 4 months before trading it in and the M for a year, she bought them both new.

I also used to sell cars and had to drive 10 of them a day, a few were nice but you had to get up there in price, the others were to slow to get out of its own way.

Most of the lower BMW come with the crappy plastic leatherette or you can get that rock hard leather, if you want to get the nicer stuff you have to go to the higher models.

I have found other cars to complement the FD but not replace it.

100% agreed. You have no idea how many times I have had to defend this point.

Personally I would recommend... 03+ (AP2) S2000, lotus elise/exige, supra, or a legit s15 silvia rhd if you are looking to stay with a tuner car in a semi-similar class (weight/wheel base) s2k's w/ turbo kits can be alot to handle since and one of my personal favorite rwd sport cars. most of the guys move from the s2k to a lotus after they get old and are done modding them lol

have an 04 lemanns z06 next to the fd. stock vs stock is hard battle cuz z06 looks similarly sexy, i ran 12.03 in z06 w/ just a k&n filter and personally tuned it. fd w/ few mods can be as fast easily or faster lol

I think it depends how long you ownd the car and how much blood, sweat, and tears you put into it. If it's bone stock, and the only thing you did was change the oil, i could see letting it go to make money on it. but if you've been through the good and the bad with it, i could see keeping it because of the connection.
I had a CRX that had 7 different motor/turbo setups in that i couldn't put a price on because i had it for so long.

I left my R1...and I came back in a v8 rx7....then left again. I love the FD body style and appreciate its timeliness along with the perfection of a nice, smooth running rotary. The FD brand new off the lot with a perfect TT system was HEAVEN. For me, tuning it into NS or single or even going V8 was just the boredom of wanting something different.

Without an FD now and I still think about when I can get another one.

I thought about selling mine. I hadn't driven it in over a year--burping coolant. I finally got it back on the road and its driving great (except for a boost leak). Now I can't wait to get a PFC and mount my intercooler and really have some fun.

I still remember the first time I really drove my first FD. I was hooked from the get go. That being said...

The C5Z is hands down, the best bang for the buck sports car on the market today in my humble opinion. I spent a long time hating the Corvette over the years, but they really stepped up their game with the C5, and it's only gotten better in the C6. There are so many cool things on the C5Z, like the stock titanium exhaust, super light weight wheels, the CF hood on the later model C5Z's, etc... Not to mention the LS6 engine. The FD is a hell of a car and I'll always have at least one, but they need a good bit of upgrades to be able to hang this day and age(that's ok though, it is almost 20 years old now), and I don't mean engine... I mean primarily suspension and brakes. I've owned somwhere around 25-30 FD's over the years. I sold off my 1st FD in 2004 and bought it back in 2007. I'll prob. have it for a long time to come. I currently have 2 rotary FD's and an LS1 FD race car(road course) and have logged a good bit of road course miles in sequential, non sequential, single turbo, and LSX FD's... as well as many other cars to include my 03 C5 Z06 that I sold a couple of months ago. Also drive a good bit on the street as well It all depends on what you are looking for in a car. If mazda ever releases another rotary supercar, that'll be my next car purchase most likely... if not, I'll be looking hard at a C6Z. They can be had for high $30k's right now.
+1 I just sold my C5Z and I'm in the market for a FD. Both are great cars and both are awesome on the race track.

i think it looks pretty good when you add the 7" LCD nav display from the jap market.

definitely underpowered...although it had more power than the FD, it was lacking compared to other similarly priced cars of the time, such as the first Viper and ZR1.

not that stock power really matters for any of us, we dont leave them stock
I was actually talking about the design, not material used. Yeah maybe not terrible, but it feels dated like it was built in the 80's. I never had a problem as far as the FD door handle goes, I did broke a CRV door handle when I open the door tho, meanwhile I never had any problem with my 2 MX-6s, which has the same type of door handle as the CRV. I mean they are plastic, there's no surprise that they can't take the abuse, just replace them if they do break. But really the door handle is probably the last thing I'm gonna worry when I pick a car lol.

very honest and unbiased answer. i enjoyed reading you post as if it were almost my own. i personally agree with everything you said and feel the same way. i enjoy light, small cars with big power numbers (10seconds in under 3000lbs is HUGE numbers) personally for a daily driver i like 300-400whp lol for the track 500whp is plenty enough for me to have all the fun i am looking for haha but maybe one day i will try to push the 7 over 600whp or the c5z le mans.
if i absolutely couldnt have an fd/c5z/s13-s15/r32-r34/lotus/ae86/supra... i would HAVE TO build my own car hahaha or i guess wait til they came out with something else
