Getitng the fuel diffuser out
They're a pain sometimes. I got one out by pushing on it from the back side. The other one shattered, so I said screw it and left them out. If it does break, just dig it out with a screwdriver.

They're tricky to remove with the intake manifold still on the car - there's a good chance that you'll get bits of the plastic down into the motor. Why are you trying to change it out? Normally if you just leave them, they're fine.
Might want to use some sort of bolt extractor - something that will dig into it and let you get a grip on it enough to pull it out.
BTW, they're to help fuel atomization - the fuel spray hits the diffuser and is, well, diffused. They are good things to help get a good atomization of fuel.

OK heres a question for all you FD wizz's, i pulled the 2nd diffuser out, but only the top came out, the legs and the bottom are still in, if the injectors seat right, can i get away with only the bottom 1/2 being in?

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd continue on this one.
I was replacing a leaky fuel damper, while I had the rails off I inspected the insulators and diffusers, one of my primary diffusers bottom half was broken, the mixing plate was missing. I hope it broke before my turbo repair of last summer! or should one worry about those broken (plastic?) pieces?
I don't know if they have 122k on them or 42k from my engine rebuild, but is this piece prone to break? If so, should they be replaced?
Should they have carbon deposits?
I was trying to remove the good primary diffuser with two bent hooked paper clips as I had the others. When that didn't work I went for one heavier guage coat hanger wire. Whoops! the diffuser split in two with the mixing plate staying in the motor.
Faced with the prospects of taking of the LIM and I believe in order to get that off the exhast and turbos have to come off too, I fished the broken U shaped piece out with a bent paper clip dabbed in model cement. Glory Be!
Any insight would be appreciated.

The diffusers usually get carbon deposits, and get very brittle with age and break easily. I would take them out and replace them while you are at it. You can use a small pick with a hooked end or try finding a bolt that will screw into them and grab. I always take a vacuum cleaner afterwards in case any small pieces fell into the motor. The diffusers aren't cheep. They are something stupid like $27 each but I would replace them rather than risking a brittle one breaking and falling into the motor.
