hows it going guys, as my first post, im here as a pain in the backside.
for starters i dont know if this is where i should be asking but here it goes.

I just purchased a 3rd generation rx7 and it has a 6 speed gearbox.
im just wondering if they came standard or something like that
as i have searched the net to only find that they came in 5 speed.

please help as i have no idea (obiously) about these cars.

Not to sound insulting or anything, but are you sure it's a 6-speed tranny and not that it just has a 6-speed shift ****?

Does the tranny have synchros?

They only came as 5-speeds. A 6-speed swap is quite expensive.

 

plus most are dogboxes, not syncro trannys. big difference in the way that they drive. get under the car and see if it's still the Mazda case with new internals, or if it has a different part number from the original Mazda 5 speed. i don't know what the part number would be for the tranny, maybe someone that owns a 7 could chime in and help out

 

Someone could have figured out how to match up the RX-8 trans box to your car.... It won't last long if it's the RX-8 box

 

A little off topic.. but 6 speed trannies are to die for.. has anyone seen the Trust 6speed tranny for the FD's.. $6999, If i won the lottery I wouldn't mind blowing off money for one of these badboys..

 

Why are they "to die for"? The first 3 gears on the FD certainly don't need to be shorter, about the only place the gearing could be shorter is maybe 4th gear and definitely 5th gear. 5th gear can be made shorter fairly inexpensively.

So again, what is there "to die for"?

 

I don't believe that they are any shorter, it's a whole different gearing pattern. I do agree that 6spd's are really nothing special, after driving my friends VR-4. 1st gear on most 6spd cars is ridiclously short but that extra 6th gear is nice..

 

I suppose you could argue about it being stronger, but yet these gearsets still use the stock input and output shafts. I can't see a reason for the 6 speed gear set unless you are A. Making astronomical power levels B. Dedicated Highspeed Track car (with astronomical power level.) or C. Want to burn money just to have 6 forward gears). I would imagine most people just choose C. (if they can).

Destino, if you do a search (the search function won't work for me), with the words 6 speed gearbox, gear set, transmission etc you will find many beaten to death threads about all the differen't options regarding upgrades. Such as a synchromesh or dog gear, gear set from HKS or Greddy/Trust, or the Guru dogbox etc.

 

doesn't need closer gear spacing.. are you crazy. The gap between 4th and 5th is huge. A shift into 5th at readline knocks you back 5mph, and then you have that long slow climb to max speed. I would love to have a little taller 4th moving my shift point to 135 - 140 and a new 5th that carried well into 160 before needing to shift into eco gear.

Gears are either shorter or taller, and they ain't taller with a 6-speed box....

 

You mean a shorter 4th.....pretty much your comments equal exactly what I just said above....

 

and wheres the proof that their any shorter with the 6 speed gear box? Again, you can't be sure that the gearing would be shorter in a 6spd, because theres different ratios for different trannies. I'd doubt a 6spd gearing ratios would be shorter than a 5spd stock FD's but I guess it would depend on the maker of the box. I'd hate to have a dogbox though, bleh

Because the whole idea of increasing the number of gear ratios is to tighten up the gear spacing (making the gears shorter) to allow the engine to stay within its powerband for maximum acceleration. Not just tack on another gear on top that the engine will never be able to pull...
