All RX-7s are not the same.... The FC chassis had at least three differently setup up gearboxes that I know of... (NA, 87-88 TII, 89-91 TII). The FDs in the USA all had the same ratios in every year... The Japanese market FDs did have some different gears than the USA models, but I -think- that the only differences were in the 5th gear ratio (and also some models had a 4.33 diff).

Every "turbo" gearbox that I know of on RX-7s had 1-4th as follows

1 - 3.483
2 - 2.015
3 - 1.391
4 - 1.000

Then there are three different 5th ratios I know of...

0.719, 0.762, and 0.806

Sorry I can't give exact specs... you can look them up on the 'net.

As for me, I swapped out my FD-USA-5th gear (0.719:1) with a FD-Jap-5th from a special model... the Bathurst R... and I have a 0.806:1 5th now

You are correct.. I just wanted to add one thing.. I believe all FD3S have same gearing except certain model FD's.. I believe RZ tranny and RS are the only one with higher gearing.. I had this info posted awhile back.. This is also why some like to go with RZ tranny.. I'm getting one sometime this month.. hopefully..

I just installed a japanese spec tranny...and 5th gear is a lot stronger now...definitly better rpm range in the freeway...the funny thing is that at first I thought I was imagining it...what a nice suprise huh!

Yeah the USA 5th is BS. It's purely a fuel economy gear/keep the engine at low rpm gear. The 762 or 806 are much better IMO. True, at 90 mph, I'm at 4000, but whatever.
