all the fd's i've checked have smeeled of gas when you pop the oil filler cap, and they also seem to have more water in the cap that piston cars...

Automatic stock '93 Touring with 28k miles.

Car had been sitting for 4 - 6 months, took it out put under 100 miles on it and went in for an oil change.

The tech in the pit told me oil was smelling of gas. Now I'm worried.

I change the oil about every 2k miles, but right before I had put it up I had the oil changed, what gives?

I just checked my oil and it has a heavy gas smell to it too.. Its very black, was only changed maybe a few hundred ago, and its pretty thin for 20w50.

I hear a lot of people saying its "normal" because theirs is the same way.. I'm not sure if that qualifies it to be normal, but it would seem this is pretty common to say the least.. Is there a consensus on what causes this?

Also, I about **** myself when I pulled out the dipstick and saw a small circular spiral of a metal shaving stuck to the end. I don't know what this is from.. it was about an inch, inch-and-a-half long curled up to the diameter of the dip stick tube.

That does not sound good Killroy. Do another oil change soon to help flush any crap out of your system that might still be in the oil coolers.

When I first got my car, I changed the oil every 1000 miles 3 times just to be sure any and all crap was out of the system. It was fine each time. I didn't really notice any fuel smell, but then again didn't really look for it.

I've pretty much decided in my case that the gas in the oil pan had something to do with either the twin turbos, or some emmissions crap. This is b/c I swapped to single... and it does not do it anymore... My oil used to get thinned within a day of the change but not anymore...

im doing the swap to single this month, i will post if i notice any change in gas consistency in my oil... if both me and wonder experience the same thing i will conclude that it was somthing in the stock twin system

Not sure how you could blame the stock twins on the gas in the oil. Did you get the injectors cleaned or replaced to larger size when you went single? I'm pretty sure the gas in the oil is from leaking injectors.

The smell of gas in the oil is NORMAL, period. All rotary engines have blow by no matter how tight the tolerances are. It is the inherint design of the rotary engine. I have build hundreds of engines from turbocharged, N0s, supercharged, bridgeported you name it they all do it.
Change your oil often! In forced inducted engines change the oil every 1500 miles maximum, period no exceptions. On normally aspirated motors 2500. If you race the car change the oil before and after the event.

Right on! I was just going through the posts, hoping to see the right one...and there it was.

Guys listen up...it's normal. The rotary engine is going to get gas in the oil, and it's going to burn oil too. Everyone should know that by now.

I have also experienced the gas smell in my oil and I've noticed that it appears runny after the car has sat overnight after running it hard. I have a street port and was told by a reputable rotary shop that this is normal. I change my oil every 1000 miles with red line because if gas is present it will break down the oil quicker.
