gas guage accuracy?

not sure if anyone really knows this, but....

ok, now that i'm gonna be premixing i was thinking of making up a chart so i don't have to guess how much premix to add when i fill up...... just curious if anyone knows when the guage says say.... 1/2 full, is it really half full? how accurate is it?

altho....now that i think about it, premixing isn't really an exact science either. so i'm sure it wouldn't be off enough to throw off the ratio, its gonna be close either way.....

anyone have a chart like this tho before i make one up?

That's a pretty good question.

The gas gauge should stay pretty consistent over time. In general, though, if you get close on premix you're OK. Sometimes you may have a bit much oil, sometimes a bit less.

In general, I'd just always fill up the tank and it's not a problem. Put in 12 gallons at the pump? Add the appropriate amount. It's that easy.

No.

how accurate is it?
Not exceptionally.

Run your car down until the low fuel light coems on. Fill the tank. Note the number of gallons required. Add as much premix as required for that quantity the next time you refill.

mine only gets to almost 1/4 tank line when full. so i just go by milage. i am thinking of getting a new float assembly and gauge to see if that cures it

I know this may be time consuming, but wouldn't it be better to premix your fuel in a container before adding it to your tank. The reason I ask this is because with 2 cycle motors, its better to mix before you add to gas especially if you plan to run the motor soon after because the oil does not mix well when just dumped into gasoline.

An additional benefit of this method is that you will know exactly how much oil you are adding per X gallons of gas instead of guestimating and dumping a bunch of oil into your tank.

That's why it's always recommended to add any additives before pumping gas into the tank.

The FD has a low fuel light? My guage seems to read empty when I have about a third of a tank left so maybe I should just wait for the light and stop refilling so soon.

Bulb or gauge. If there's no seperate bulb for the low fuel light (and I'd be surprised if there weren't), then replace the gauge.

The body electrical troubleshooting manual has a procedure for testing the output of the fuel tank sender to see if it's within range. I suspect that it's the sender, not the gauge that is the problem.

I'd also like to know, mine doesn't work either along with the coolant/redline buzzer

Umm, isn't there horror stories of running an FD hard when low on gas?

I fill up at 1/4 tank on every car I own regardless, waiting for the light come on is very foreign to me..:P

Fuel sloshes away from the pump pickup, despite the internal baffling around the pump designed to prevent that.

Hey Jim, Thanks for the tip. The only reason i suspected the float assembly is that this problem has persisted since I bought the car. When i have the pump and float assembly out i can make the gauge read full by lifting the float up to the top of the range. And read totally empty doing the reverse. I suspected that the previouse owner( a young teenage F&F jackass) had just bent the float assembly around when he put in a "upgraded" pump.( for the 2 bottles of NOZ he was running ) I was thinking that the float was/is just getting lodged against the baffeling inside the tank.

You say body electrical troubleshooting manaul..Is that a seperate manual for the car? Or is that in the normal FSM? If seperate where do i find such a manual..on Iluvmyrx7 site?

Thanks again for the sender tip. I will check that this weekend if I find the specs and procedure.

Dave
