Funny rear noise. Hard to move at first..

Ok be patient with me pls, i did a search for this but it came up with posts about bushing which i dont think this is, (i'll be replacing them soon because i DO have that annoying clunk)

My problem is entirely different, if i get in my car after a few days of not driving it, when i first move it i get this loud bang or crack or clunk noise from the back after a bit of hestitation, (almost as if its stuck to the floor then suddenly rips free) feels as if the handbrake is still on then is release, i keep the my clucth in the same position but there is a definite hesitancy then this *crack or snap* then im off moving as normal.

So what would cause this because of a few days not driving? It doesnt happen again stopping and starting all the time until i leave it days on end again. Very odd and annoying, bit concerning also

Thanks

Ryan

The same thing happened to me twice, when I first got the car. Both times, it was after letting the car sit for almost two weeks.

It hasn't happened for a while so I'm not so concerned anymore. I'm thinking the pads are somehow rusting on the rotors and are breaking free.

I have a '95 too, but I dont think that should matter.

weird. rear brakes frozen to the rotors from being clamped to them all night? maybe? and when you start moving it frees them hence then cracking and bang. have someone stand next to your car and look at your brakes to see where the noise is coming from. if it's not that at least you'll have a better idea where it's coming from.

if you don't get any other noises like that when driving that's my guess.

It definitely sounds like your rear brake pads are sticking to the disc, especially since you live in the U.K., where it's pretty damp this time of year. Whenever I wash my car and let it sit overnight without taking it for a spin afterward, I get the same noise when I initially move the car. Apparently the water seeps into the brake pad, and the metallics in the pad compound forms a sort of "rust" bond with the disc surface.

first of all cheers for the replies, eases my mind!

They are new pads and discs, noticed a slight coating of rust on the rears, didnt even think this would be related.

Thinking about it that seems a very likely reason for my prob, i'll get somebody to drive my car a few feet and have a listen/look myself.

cheers every1 !

Last time I heard it, it was a while (days) after I washed the car, and it had been sitting since. When I moved the car, I had the driver window down and was parked next to a wall on the same side, so I could clearly hear that it was coming from the bottom rear of the car.

I blamed a sticking brake pad, since the car didn't roll when I released the parking brake, and the driveway is a little slanted. Also, when releasing the parking brake, the handle felt "weak" since the pads bound the calipers.

The sound scared the hell out of me -- I don't blame you for being concerned! It's a very loud thud that resonates the springs. I figured anything that made a noise THAT loud would definitely be an evident problem when the car is cruising.
