funny odometer prob. *searched*

hi guys.. lately i have been having some probs with my car...my clutch and all... looks like i hit a periodic stage. and now my odo is acting lil crazy...did a search but nothing was similar to mine.. so here goes...
today while driving i notice that my odo was still showing km's till when i stopped (for like 20mins?) when i
wanted to fire it up... just b4 cranking i would usually steal a glance at the odo.. it still showed and after cranking up... the odo just went blank! after like a min of driving it came back... so when i reached home i waited abt an hour before trying to crank up again and same thing happened.. only this time it did not 'burst back to life'... all in all i tried abt 5 times and nothing still.
in a nutshell... before cranking odo reading is there . after crank and engine starts running reading is gone.. any tips/advice is greatly appreciated!

It could be a problem with the odometer light bulb. Try replacing it or making sure it's seated properly.

Well that has me at a loss... FD circuit boards are known to have very poor solder joints from the factory, especially in the gauge cluster. You might carefully try re-soldering the connections for the odo.

have same problem kind of mine works sometimes and doesnt other times happens randomly while driving. Planned on taking the dash apart next weekend and seeing if something was loose or shorting. speedometer and tach use to do the same thing found bare wires shorting where they go into transmission repaired wires fixed tach and speedo but not odometer. Let me know what you find and I will do the same.

sorry for the late reply. ok i kinda solved the problem...

initially when i started the car nothing came out ... after comming back form a roadtrip... i decided to warm her up still nothing but just because it was night time when i was doin the warming up... i turn on the headlights... and viola it just came back on !! i turned off the car and turn it on again same thing happened (switch on the lights thn odo comes on) BUT third time a charm... its now working perfectly...
which brings me to ... 'why?' wiring prob?

It's the capactitors going bad that makes it go blank. You have to replace them on the odometer board
