Full Text Diagnostics?

Full Text Diagnostics?
I am running the stock ECU, and when my check engine light comes on, I want to be able to see exactly what the problem is without grounding out the diagnostic fuse box and getting the code...is there a way to see it full text, like a palm pilot data link or something?
