AZ Fuel Tank Question...

Well I recently had my fuel tank out and had the tank cleaned by a radiator shop that also offers fuel tank cleaning as one of the services that they provide.

When I got the tank back and all put together I was pretty low on fuel, guessing maybe 2 gallons. I went to the gas station to fill up but the tank only took 12 gallons and when the gas pump clicked, gas laterally shot out and splashed my hand.

I just removed the tank to see what I could find. There is no pressure build up so I know that the vents are working correctly. Pulling off the small hose that connects to the main fill hose, I found some masking tape inside the tubing that leads into the tank. I’m sure that this is probably the problem but I have a dumb question just to make sure I’m not missing anything.

There is a main fill tube that enters the tank and is about a 45 degree angle. Intuitively I would guess that this would enter the tank angled toward the bottom of the tank which is the way it was installed when I received the tank back. But as a notorious over thinker, if it was facing angled upward, more gas would fill the tank before entering the fill tube and stopping the gas pump from filling. I’m positive this was removed and reinstalled after the tank was cleaned.

Probably a stupid question but I don’t want to have to take the tank out again.

Does anyone know if this fill tube does indeed face downward?
