fuel guage

i have a 93 rx-7 w/ 60k miles on it. i've had it for about a year and this is my first problem. after filling up the tank, every time i get about 16 miles on the tank the needle for the guage drops to about half tank. it sits there till about 26 miles then comes back up to normal position. any ideas on what's wrong? i was thinking the coils that send to the gauge might be bad in those spots b/t 16 and 26. gas mileage is still consistent to what it's always been. thanks, nick

I agree it could be a problem with the sending unit in the tank. Consider replacing it...

either the resistor part of the sender is messed up or the floating thing attached to it could be half on and half off. you need to open up you gas tank, pull out the pump assembly, take off the sender and test it. a new sending unit is about $85 from mazdatrix. i have one i can sell you too for a lot cheaper. don't buy one though till you verify that it is not just the floating thing being loose.

Know you probably have this solved by now, but the two GSl-SE's i've owned had similarissues. Both due to the sending unit being installed at an angle instead of straight up and down. My first one I could pull it out and move it, now it's 100% accurate.
May just be a downfall of some idiot working at mazda telling manufacturing that it should be mounted wrong.

this is my second fd, and I do not remember seeing a fuel light on my first rx7 , but I definately have not seen it on my current rx. I was wondering, does the light light up like all the rest of the lights do when you first turn your ignition on??????? I'm wondering if my light is burned out. Is it easy to replace????

It is in the fuel gauge right below the E. It is a small round Yellow light. You can bearly see the round outline in the day.
