front mount vs. stock mount, any numbers

I am trying to decide if I should go with a front mount or large stock mount. I have read all the debates between the two and was wondering if anyone has any numbers comparing the two, like intake temps and coolant temps. I always have lean towards a large stock mount but I am starting to think maybe a front mount. All my friends say go with a front mount cause they look cool but I want the best function.

I had a Greddy SMIC and now have a Blitz FMIC.
No numbers but here are my observations.

In winter: no difference for normal driving or sprints; FMIC a little better
for repeated acceleration.

In summer: FMIC always runs cooler than the SMIC but it cools even better for repeated acceleration. Water temps are about 5 degrees hotter without fans running with the FMIC. But with the fans running, especially in stop and go driving, the fans cool the FMIC even more while the SMIC heat soaks. The fans can be either on by the AC or manual switch. FMIC bonus, more room between the radiator and engine.

I'll never go back to SMIC.

I wouldnt go back to a SMIC either....Why? Heat Soak!!

the FMIC is so much nicer and effective...I once had a PFS SMIC and its really did nothing....

Put a front mount in your be happier you did

Front mount are cool No, really your car runs alot stronger with FMIC than SMIC. I had the Greddy SMIC and it worked great just don't sit still for more than a minute. It would heat soak to a point where you can't even touch it. Ouch!

Now I have the Greddy 2row FMIC. I was very surprised that it did not have any noticeable lag or overheating problems.

I have the ASP large Race IC...I have no experience with front mounts...but my outlet side of my IC has never been to the point where I cant touch it...I also have a fan on the IC and it rarely comes on..

I think it is somewhere around 230 F exiting the turbo housing

FMIC mitigates heat soak issues, true...but unless you drag race, I don't see it as a big deal...a good SMIC like the M2 med/large is very effective, it was tested in SCC to cool the charge down from 230 F to about 100 F on a summer day...is an FMIC that much better than a good SMIC when the car is in motion? I doubt it....btw, the greddy SMIC is a joke

at least on the street, I like the fact that the IC does not blow hot air on your radiator

if only we had 911 TTs, with two big ICs mounted in the back! that is a better set up....blow all that hot air right out the back of the car

I'm not sure if it has been discontinued, but I really liked the crooked willow large SMIC with the vented hood and a duct funneling the hot air from the IC right out the vent....very nice

I think alot of us have the tendency of buying the biggest bang possible even if it isnt the best buy. I didnt think I wld ever buy an IC but after hanging out on these boards for the past 4 months Im leaning towards getting one now.
Wld somethng like the M2 med SMIC or PFS SMIC be a worthy upgrade when compared to the stock IC?
All I have is a DP,CB,M2 Intake(to be installed soon) and PFC. I run 12psi max and Im pretty much happy with the performance I get out of it now for the most part. My driving is limited to mostly just Sunday drives out in the twisty parts of the state if I have the time. I am considering trying an AutoX or two this yr, I guess Ill wait and see whats goin on w/ the RoadCourse in E-Town.

IMO, the FMIC sounds like it is superior but the major modifications it calls for i.e. battery relocation, radiator placement and so on just seems like more work AND $$$ than its worth for my driving style.

Am I wrong?

Also, is there such thing as OVERKILL when speaking of IC's?

y esthere is such thin gas overkill , a huge intercooler will create more pressure drop and the air wont get as fast to your engine so u will be lagging a bit, and for your driving style it doesnt seem like u need anything mayeb teh medium m2... there are too many factors involved between teh fmic and smic....

The biggest issue with getting an IC (either SMIC or FMIC) is that the fuel system is unlikely to keep up. You'll have to get a computer. No question on that. You'll probably have to upgrade the fuel pump and possible the injectors.

The m2 medium is an gigantic upgrade over stock. I have it and wouldn't trade it for a front mount. Actually I did the opposite. I traded the greddy 3 row fmic for it. btw I agree about the greddy smic being garbage.

Yes, you can't really compare the Greddy SMIC or the PFS to the M2. I had the Apexi FM and I now have the M2 and I also would not trade it for any of the FMIC's out there.

What about the restrictions from the oem bumper. air flow as well as fitment for a fmic.
Anyone has anything on that?
