I've seen a few diff designs. Think one is actually from Mazda. Kinda a U shaped mount that drills in behind the bumper. No visible holes.

OK nevermind, pic won't load. Sorry, but anyway, no visible holes, they were already in my bumper. Doesn't look too bad, saves the trouble of tickets.

bracket

My car came with a bracket that is a PITA to put on.

It has a flat piece that goes over the bumper support that has nuts on it. the U shaped bracket has two bolts the go into the flat piece clamping in on above the opening of the radiator intake. This allows the plate to be supported and held above the intake opening to prevent blocking the much needed cooling flow. I would attach a pic but the car in in storage for the winter.

I saw a guy that made one with a couple angle brackets. They screwer into the holes on the top of the intake mouth and angled up. He just bolted the plate to that and had it mounted up high and out of the intake path. If you get the right size angle brackets the plate doesnt rub the bumper and actually doesnt look too bad.

did the american fd's come with front plate holders? I bought mine and it didn't have a plate nor a bracket. And the guy I bought it from doesn't strike me as the type to take it off. He's one of those guys who is happy with cars in stock form.

If you go to your local Mazda dealer you can buy a factory licensce plate bracket. I think it has two bolts on it that you just screw into two holes just below the top part of the nose of your 3rd gen. There should be two holes already there and threaded.

There is a picture of one on my car:
http://www.swvarx7.org/members.php?page=codyAnderson

It may not look as cool as a 3rd gen without it, but it sure beats paying those stupid fines that you get here in VA. I have a friend who has had to pay the fine at least 3 times in the last couple of years, because he didn't have a front licensce plate.

You have got to love VA. If it's illegal anywhere it must be in illegal in VA.

Kinda strange because mine came with a front license plate but I took it off. I didn’t like the way it looked and didn’t see the point since there are cars that don’t have front license plates and they don’t get pulled over. I have seen many Corvettes and Porsche out there with no front license?_? I once heard if your car has a place for the font license then you have to have one, but if there is no place for it like on many Corvettes then you don’t need one. But that could only apply to laws in CA! I don’t see the point of a front license plate seeing if a cop is chasing you he won’t be reading your font license. If I was you I would look into it!

I dont think there is a single state that has a license plate law that doesnt apply if your car doesnt have a plate mounting bracket. And any car sold in the US does have a license plate bracket available for it. The Vette has a spot molded into the front bumper, it has a piece of plastic that fits into that space so the car looks better on the dealer lot and in states that dont require plates. A couple of screws and there is a big hole that fits the plate perfectly.

I meant the ones I see driving around don’t have a license in the font. I haven’t driven with a front license for almost a year and no one has said anything to me! So I have no clue it is just something I heard.

Wow Me too

That’s crazy that you got stopped for no front plate because I got stopped for the same thing. I told the cop I was in a fender bender and replaced the front bumper with an aftermarket and that I was waiting for the bracket that I ordered to show up in the mail.

Clever idea - but I'll do ya' one better:

I used black commercial grade 2" wide velcro and put a strip of "pile" the length of the license plate on the bottom center of the of the bumper where it's hardly noticeable. You'll need to clean the bumper with alcohol first to get the glue to stick, then appy the velcro, press it down firmly and let it sit for 24 hours.

I put the same length strip of "hook" on the bottom back of the plate, put a cheesy frame on it just for effect, then threw it across the driveway a couple of times to scuff it up a little. I store it behind my driver's seat in the map pocket.

When I get stopped and asked why no front plate, (it's only happened twice in ten years) I simply whip it out and say "This darned plate keeps falling off all the time and I really need to figure out a better way to keep it in place than this stupid design!"

I then calmly walk around to the front, stick it on, and say "buh bye" to Mr. Occifer.....

(I of course take it off a day later.......)

Hmmmm, I think this might just qualify for - you guessed it: ANOTHER GHETTO MOD!!!

I made my own brackets also, just took a flat bar of aluminum cut it in 2, bent them at 90degree angles and bolted'em under there, but my original idea was to goto a printing shop and have the plate printed on some of that plastic stuff that sticks to glass and stuff but you can still peel it off and stick on as many times as you want, Im sure it would stick to the clear coat, you would just leave it on all the time but at least it would look so big and ugly...
anyway I bent my plate a little to help contour with the car...

Oh, I wish it were true. I was at Venice Beach one time in my 87 Firebird and got pulled for no front plate. I told him that I didn't have a place to put it (IE no bracket). He told me I'd better get one. No fine and I never did get pulled over again though. CA laws are weird.

Oh well. Mine never had a bracket. Haven't had any problems...yet.

i jury rigged one
i will post pics if asked
i used picture hanging wire to tie it to the support bars or whatever in the main opening in the bumper anf tied it through my R1 lip
i hot glued a cut op towel to the back of the plate so that it wouldnt scratch paint
its centered well and pretty stable
but the bottom of it is at most 3 inches off the ground
oh well
let the sparks fly!!!
