Free and Cheap Cosmetic/Performance Mods
Hey guys im sitting at home bored right now trying to figure out something i can do to my FD. I've done the 99' tail light conversion and vented the BOV to the atmosphere. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any mods that wont cost much but will enhance something whether it be simply cosmetic or boost performance in some way. Any links, ideas, walk-throughs etc would be greatly appreciated. I know someone has to have something to do.
Thanks in advance

Lol we're in the same boat. I've done the same things as you. But I'm one step ahead 8)
Yesterday I:
Bought red 1200 degree engine paint
Painted my calipers red(5 coats)
I didnt take them off to paint them, just used newspaper to make sure everything was covered right. It took a while though.
Today I:
Cleared out my front turn signals!
Theres one screw on the outer edges. On the inner edges theres a clip, so pull out on the side with the where the screw was while pushing in on the inner side and slide to the left at the same time. Unscrew the bulbs and let them dangle. Use the heatgun you used on your tail lights to head up the adhesive on the lights. I guess an oven is ok, but I would recomend against it. There are 6 'tabs' around the edge of the casing that you will need to use a very small flathead screwdriver to pop out. Work slowly going from one end to another and be careful not to get any adhesive on the lens. After you have them apart there are 2 screws holding in an amber piece and a metal piece.. just take out the amber piece and keep the metal piece in there. If you have some new adhesive/silicon use a uniform line to reseal them. If you want to change out your bulbs for brighter/yellow bulbs go ahead, sorry I don't know the bulb sizes off the top of my head. Put them back in and you are good to go!
Tommorow I:
Will be buying a white or silver paint marker to do the mazda lettering on my front pads.
Hope this helps, have fun. BTW if you do your turn signals it really does not take a very long time. After you figure out how to get the first one open you can open the second one 5 times as fast. I know it's really easy to do, but still no one has done a writeup until now. 8)

Check out the robinette site for more info on the stock air box mod. Do a search on it too because I belive someone had some decent step-by-stop how-to pics awhile back. It's basically just out a section of the bottom half of the air box to allow for more air flow.

Clean the engine bay
Jack up the FD, remove all the tires, and give her a good washing in each fender well and the entire suspension.
Not challenging or time consuming enough for you? Grab a tooth brush and start detailing the engine bay. Still need to have some additional fun? Remove the upper intake manifold and start polishing it.

Yup, did it and it works. Search under "hot air out" and you'll stay busy for a couple of days. It's back there somewhere from earlier this year. I love ghetto mods.

This is the what the home depot boost controller looks like. It's basicly a needle valve you put in place of the restrictor pills in your vacuum lines.
When I replaced my cats with a DP, and highflow cat I was seeing too much boost. So I spent a few bucks at lowes(since no home depot here carried the valve), and avoided paying too much for an electronic boost controller.
The instructions can be found on Rob Robinette's webpage

I'm also thinking about rigging up a misting system for my intercooler, but I'm not sure if I should pipe the ducts to reduce heat... decisions decisions.
Is there anything other ghetto mods you guys can think of? If it weren't so late I would be able to remember some of my crazy ideas...

There's one more mod that hasn't been suggested yet. AST elimination... This also can be found on Rob Robinette's site.

Oh yeah, I also put stainless steel mesh in my nose and and oil cooler intakes, as well as the naca duct exits behind the wheel wells. Cost $25.00 including hardware. Looks OK - (not really......) but it DOES keep rocks and bugs from dinging up the fins on the rad and coolers.
I think we should start a separate forum area for ghetto mods. As long as it does NOT come from a Civic and is original it should be allowed. I'll be the judge of taste and style ). It's got to be cheap but not cheese.
Whadda ya say Mod Gods??? Imagine actually having a FUN and CREATIVE area here.
