You could probably get a used engine off this forum for about $1K depending on the condition. I would check the For Sale/Parts section and seach for "engine" and maybe you can see what the going rates are.

To do a good job I'd guess between $3-5K. To throw something in and have it run would be 1/2 that.

anyhow, to answer your question. I had an engine swap on my 3rd gen, labor and all it was around 5k. This doesnt include the tranny.
Its my opinon that not matter what car you buy, its not going to be a safe form of transport unless youve invested around 15-16k into it. whether you buy it cheap and redo things, or just buy it at that price.

Please post photos of the 4-cyl installed in an FD. Personally I wouldn't buy a project car unless I already knew everything about the project: price, time committment, difficulty or level of fabrication skills needed.
