Fixing a Fuel Leak….

My story starts about 8 months ago…with my ‘93

Started smelling fuel and having a LOT of hesitation…stalling at almost every stop sign, but it would start right back up again as long as I kept giving it gas…

Took it right to a shop. They told me a part was bad (didn’t mention what part it was) and that they would have to remove all the turbo hoses to get to it. They quoted a low repair fee (under $300 including the “part”) and got to work. Unfortunately all the hoses started to crumble when they removed them and they wanted to replace with only mazda hoses. Big bucks…. Then they called and said the battery was dead because no one knew how to get the key out of the ignition.

The tow truck picked it by the end of the day.

I’m not a great mechanic…but I can follow instructions. And finally it looks like I will have time to work on it.

From the searches I have done here I am guessing that:

- Pulsation Dampener needs to be replaced
- Turbo Hoses will also be replaced

My question is…

What else should I be considering doing while I am in there?? And is my initial assumption valid??

Thanks for the help…

are you planning on upgrades in the future? if not then you should just do a silicone hose upgrade, change the fuel hoses and fpd.. . . . . and yes your assumptiong is valid. those are the symptoms of a bad fpd.

replace your turbo hoses with polished aluminum hoses.

I am planning on upgrades in the future (or even now if it will co-incide with the hose replacement).

What I am looking for is some advice to consolodate my time and upgrade the area that I am being "forced" to work on.

Currently the only upgrades are a blow off valve (hey...it sounded cool), and a Tanabe cat-back.

hmmmmmmmm. you need to just stick with replacement then. i was gonna say that you could upgrade your injectors, buy a block-off plate kit (which makes it easier to replace the fpd), and replace the fpr (with an sx or aeromotive unit). there are others im sure that im not thinking of right now, but you need another ecu for that stuff. . . or some piggyback system. you can replace the fpr, but you need to set the pressure to 30. if i were you i would just replace the parts for now. it will cost you a lot of money and downtime to get it back up and running with all the mods.
