How many of you changed your own clutch for the first time??

Can it be done on a jack and jack stands??
or does the whole tranny need to be dropped?

Ive done my clutch twice (the spec one i had blew up). The first time i did it was in the repair shop i used to work at. Of course it was easy when you have a lift, tranny jack, air tools, and lots of empty room to move stuff around. The second time I did it was on the floor of my garage with jack stands. It was more cramped, but didnt really slow me down that much. Stabbing the transmission back on the engine was a big hassle though, mainly because when Im on my back I cant get a lot of good leverage to lift the tranny. I had to have my roomate help and it was still a pain. So ya, in conclusion you can do it with just jack stands, and its really simple, but the tranny is heavy so you're gonna want some help probably both pulling it and stabbing it back on.

Read through that link and Mahjik's post. He hits nearly everything I would have, especially access to an air compressor and a strong impact wrench. MUCH easier. There's also this video that might be helpful:

Consider a new clutch fork and rear transmission seal too. ~$50 total. The higher you can get the car, the easier. The drained transmission isn't that heavy, just awkward, two guys can do it.
