First Rex?

Hey, I know what all you guys think if I tell you that I am a teenager in high school. "Oh great, this little punk has just rented the fast and the furious and now he's going to steal one of our most prized possessions, the almight RX-7". Hear me out though. I have been driving a 73 240z for about the past year and the handling astounds me which is why I feel RX-7 may be the next step. How many kids do you see going to school these days in old vintage z's. I didn't have a body kit. I get **** on by the ricers because my car is "old" but when they try to ******* race me home I lose them in the canyon because their shitty wiper lights can't bail them out of this situation. My great aunt just passed away and I may be inheriting a hefty sum of money. I wanted to get a 93 but am worried about the complexity of the engine. I can completely service just about every part of my z except doing porting and other machining methods because I dont have the tools...so my question is this. Can I service a 7 for most of the work. Fluids and bolt ons. I don't mind taking my potential 7 to a shop occasionly but I am not here to ruin this cars deep heritage. I am here to attain and maintain a car so maybe someday my kids may own a legend from my generation. Do you think a 7 is right for a clueless high school punk like me. I have a truck as well so this doesn't necessarily mean I will be driving the 7 every morning to school even though I have a lenghty distance to travel to and fro. I just want to know your opinions if a young kid got an rx-7. It just irritates me that teenagers are instantly classified as ricers. If you saw a 17 year old driving an RX-7 would you flip him of and tell yourself "what a waste of a great car" or would you keep open minded. I just want to clear up peoples opinions of kids driving nice cars even if they happened to purchase it themselves. Maybe I didn't earn every penny to buy a rx-7 but I have a job and I live in small town California where most people probably wouldn't realize what my car was.

thanks joel, nice car too. Another thing that made me want to jump on a 7 is because it seems like a lot of them are being bought up by the wrong kind of people putting them on chrome dubs or something stupid like that. I am just worried by the time I am at a "mature age" to purchase one that all the good ones are gone unless I want to pay more than what they cost brand new. I am hoping to wait out the release of the 8 so some owners might retire their 7s and I can pick one up for an ok price. Also the SCC magazine this month has an article about buying an FD at the right price and it has great info but it also worries me because the next page is like "Fast and Furious 2 Pictures and Storyline!!!". it is just annoying and frustrating that these cars are going to vandalized now that some vin diesel just found out what an rx-7 is.

I often wonder what older people think when they see me too. not that I care, but usually people get jealous.

Anyway, even though some people may disagree with me, I don't think that fundamentally, working on an RX-7 is any different than any other early 90's car (minus the engine internals). it's just basic mechanics skills and the willingness to learn the quirks of these cars. This board is a god send with the wealth of information that can be found here and the people like turbojeff and maxcooper (among others) that will usually help you out with any techinical questions.

I thought that that was you car in your avatar, guess not. Well anyways. I don't know how much money I am getting but it should be enough to buy an rx-7 and hopefully get a rebuilt engine and all reliability mods + some good bolt ons. The thing is I don't wanna dump all the money I get on the car sooo I'm not going to mod it extreme. I think just an rx-7 is a step up from a z so a mildly modded one will be heaven for me.
