Unhappy First problem with my new FD

I just bought my 94 three days ago. The motor, tranny and turbos have 6,000 miles on them. All of a sudden i can hear a leak from the turbo side of the motor and my turbos spool really loud. When the second turbo kicks in it sounds horrible and does not pull even half as hard as when i first had the car. I am installing a bost gauge next week, the car did not come with one so i dont know if i am losing boost or not. What could the leaking sound be from? Also i can smell a little bit of burnt oil in the engine bay but no oil anywere? Any help would be great!

yep.. sounds like a boost leak. I just fixed mine 2 weeks ago also. there's a coupling between the y-pipe and the intercooler piping it's the buried one, and is prone to go out. the new upgraded coupling costs 60 bucks but it'll outlast your car. If you don't know what you're doing take it to a mechanic, it should take about 15-20min.

Yeah I get that oil smell sometimes after running the car real hard...I think it's the turbine gas, but I don't pay much attention to it as long as nothing is smoking.

As for the loss of boost, you should really get a downpipe. A clogging pre cat can cause boost drop at higher RPM's.

Turbine gas?? Must be an option?

Any oil smells can be fixed by fixing the offending oil leak. Leaks are common on the oil return lines for the turbos, luckily the rear line is more prone to leak and it is easier to get to.

I concur with everyone else, the loud leaking noise you have is probably the y-pipe coupling. Don't bother with a Mazda part, go to a place that sells hose. Buy a chunk of 2.75" silicone hose, cut to length. If you can't find silicone rubber rad hose will work too. Rad hose is under both heat and pressure similar to boost hose. Easy cheap fix.

Alright guys. I checked the coupling and all the other vacume lines and oil line around the area of the coupling and turbos. I found nothing wrong at all. My car makes no boost out of the second turbo. It just makes a lots of noise like air rushing through the motor. In another post someone said there is a can type sileniod under the car, and if the c-clamp came off then it would cause the car to lose boost and make a loud leaking sound. True or not? And where can i find that silenoid? Is there anyone in the Maine, N.H., Mass. area that could help me out? What do i do now? Thanx for your help guys.

Dizastical...

If I were you. I would go ahead
and change the Ypipe/intercooler
coupler anyways.. It may still be the
problem. But you can never tell because
it would only lose boost pressure under
pressure. So sitting still withe hood up,
it may look fine/nothing wrong. BUT
with 10psi, it may be singing like a canary..

good luck

If your secondary turbo isnt making any boost and sounds like air rushing through, it may be that a hose popped off under your UIM. You might wanna check amongst the some 80+ hoses under there =)

check all the hosees around that area. I had a similiar loud noise, and it was a cracked hose about 2-3" long that runs to the air pump.

I thought that was what you ment. Do i have to take off the intake manifold to get to the hoses because it is pretty hard to se in there?

I had this same problem on my last 3rdgen. It ended up being the vertical coupler between the Y pipe and the air pipe that runs diagonally over to the intercooler (it is right next to the manifold and possibly the heat affected it). It looked fine but as soon as I changed it out it fixed the leaking/no boost problem. Hope this is the same for you because it was a very cheap and easy fix.

If i do a XS single turbo kit, what can i take out of the engine bay as far as vacume lines go? Will the instructions tell me what to keep and what to rip out? What kit would you guys go with?

Damn near all the lines go, not much stays behind. I have never seen actual directions of a single turbo "kit" so I dont know how detailed they may be. I just know that very few hoses would still be there,

There was a loose bolt on the manifold that hold the turbos. I guess boost was leaking out of it and causing the car to make a horrible sound and not make it go any faster. Does this sound right? It still sounds like i have a leak coming from the passengers side floor board. Everyone that gets in the car thinks that it is still fast but i think there is still something wrong. What do i do?
