First mods for $2k (last ? for the night... promise)

I feel like I might be annoying some people with my beginner questions. I have read lots of these sites I've been told about before. I am a newbie to the forum... not totally from the RX. All that I really know is reading stuff though. Everyone here has experience... which is what actually counts... that is why I'm asking you all the questions. Thanks again for all of your help!

So here's the ?

What mods should be done for $2k to a stock FD (based on good conditions considering engine and turbos)? I don't want body kits... stereo... bla bla bla... I don't care about these things. I want a SCCA star! This is a starting point... there will be future mods in store. Keep daily driven in mind. THANKS AGAIN!!!

First get realiability done:

have car completely checked out:

New Plugs, Wires, vacuum lines, etc.
change all fluids (esp. in tranny - always gets forgotten)
ast or remove it.
boost gauge (get a good one)
full exhaust (downpipe , catback, hi-flow cat)
intake
radiator
...
.
.
.
i think you'll be out of money,

but next you might need bigger fuel pump and a fuel computer, and a boost controller (be careful when turning up the boost)....

You can go on and on, intercooler, single turbo, injectors, kaaz differential, etc, etc.......

.
.
.
really expensive.

Assuming you do allthe work your self:

$150 plugs, wires, fluids, etc.
$150 Boost gauge
$300 downpipe
$300 intake
$450 Radiator
$400 Catback

Then getting a reprogrammed ECU (~$400 for a used one.) will keep you close to your 2k limit, but many on the forum like the PFC, but thats $1200

THast for reliability and some power though. For SCCA you may want to spend some $$ on suspension stuff.

Outside of basic maintence I would go with a the Pettit Track Pro Master System 1. It will help the most with what you plan on doing as far as SCCA goes. A radiator would be my next step followd by an Intake and Exhasut. That will free up a little more horse power but not so much that your car becomes too powerful for AutoX and Road Racing. Good tires will also help a ton and a lightweight flywheel sometime in the future to help you rev up faster for when you exit the corners. $2000 is just not enough to get you where you want to be but the Suspension is $1099+$375 for the Radiator+$300 for the Intake+$400 for the exhaust. So you would spend about $2200 for it all plus all the basic mods and newer tires. The flywheel could wait till you burnt out the clutch.

you guys go no love for evans coolant?

i would save 450 for a new rad, get evans for $50, pick up a pfc, and make a new rad you next mod

just my opinion though, i know this evans stuff is contraversial(how ever its spelled)

don't forget about class restrictions for SCCA Solo II. if you plan on time trialing (Solo I) then you can disregard the rest of this post. SS (Super Stock) doesn't allow most of the mods that everyone is listing here. but if you just want the extra power, then go for it; but you'll be running with the big boys in ASP (A-class Street Prepared) or SM2 (Street Modified 2) depending on what you do. i'm not trying to be a class ****, but if you get good and start competing at regionals or nationals, the tech's there WILL say something.

IMO, the best mods for Solo II are:

1) struts (Konis, Bilsteins, Tokicos) ~ $600
2) tires (street or racing) ~ $500 - $1500
3) Evolution Auto-X school ~ $500

i think it serves you better to know how to push the car to its limits first. then, when you have full control of the car through decreasing-radius slaloms and multiple offsets, then add more power with these mods. the FD is already fast enough (keep note of all the other cars in SS : Z06 & all C5 Vette's, 2001 - newer M3's & M roadsters, Viper's, 1998 - newer 911's & Boxster S, AMG SLK32, Lotus Espirit Turbo). if you can't handle it now, imagine what it'll be like when you add 50-100 RWHP. can you say "in the weeds"?

anyhow, if you're not planning on racing nationals, then do what you want. for Solo II, handling is God, then power ("why do those miata's always turn in fast times? because they don't brake, dude."). although for reliability purposes, i might go ahead and invest in the downpipe.

go to www.rx7store.net and look under 'engine' and I believe it is at the bottom. Also check with www.pettitracing.com but I don't know where it is off their site.
