mahjik I understand what you're saying. Is that speculation or have you seen or read proof of this in an rx7?

It's not really RX7-specific. I saw an E36 M3 roll over outside turn 3 at Summit main several years ago. No cage, the roof collapsed severely on the passenger side since it went down first (rolled to the outside off a left-hand turn). Both driver and pass were wearing harnesses with factory seats. The driver walked away since the roof held up pretty well on his side, but the passenger was taken to the hospital with neck trauma as the roof collapsed onto his head. Not sure what happened to him after that, but it took them at least 10 minutes just to get him out of the car onto a stretcher. During that time, you could see that the harness held his body upright in the seat, his head just had nowhere to go.

Having seen that, I would never suggest using a harness without a cage or at least a rollbar. A rollbar would probably be safe, but at least for me with a helmet on, I'm already touching the ceiling so there isn't much room there.

Possible? yes. Probable? Well, every crash is going to be different. As always, the goal is not to crash, however we wear seats/harnesses for "just in case".

wow this is some serious subject matter we are discussing here. how interesting and a great point without a complete safety equipment ie; cage roll w/ harness andd god knows what else. what really is the point on having just the harness!!!!!!

Well, I'll say this:

I have run without a rollbar and the M2 harness bar for a few years. I have never flipped my car during or prior to the harnesses being installed. I do have a Kirk 4pt rollbar now though.

Now, I'm not saying "I did it, so it's safe for everyone". It's more for education. I do my best to provide enough information for people to make their own "informed" choice which is why I recommend to people not to use harnesses without a rollbar/cage.

So, harnesses without a rollbar/cage... do people do it? Yes. Should they? Probably not however there are a lot of things people do with cars that they probably shouldn't as well.

reminds me of Labreck's "pink FD" quips with regard to my car, without the right lighting or a mediocre camera, any red car can look "pink" (including his old Z06)
