Figured out my fuel pressure problem...

Ive had the car runnin on upgraded nippendenso for more than 4 years. Dynoed with it, driven it around did some racing with it and only recently have I suspected something was wrong with the pump itself becuase of my low fuel pressure and difficulty starting the car.

I took the pump off of the assembly and found this:




The Oring was pinched so much that it actually broke through as i was removing it from the housing. The exterior rubber cap was pinched on one side as well. Any fuel pressure I was producing was being forced right back into the fuel tank and not into the fuel lines. The pump musta been working hard to keep fuel pressure up!

Oring placed on top of the out nipple of the pump



Do you guys know where I can get a replacement Oring and rubber cap? Preferably one that I can find at a local parts store instead of buying it overpriced at Mazda and waiting for it to ship in cuase they NEVER stock anything for the fds anymore.

About any parts store has an assortment of o-rings. Just put a little grease on it when putting it back in.

You cant really overtorque it as there is nothing to "torque down." Just kinda force the plastic nipple into the metal coupler with the oring creating the seal. I think that sliding clip on the fuel pump nipple pinched it.

Does the oring wrap around that yellow sliding clip or does it sit above it? Maybe I installed it incorrectly years ago. Im just too stupid to realize how to do a simple install correctly lol

If i am not wrong you might need an o-ring made out of special rubber since is being use in the fuel system.

It looks as though you installed it right you just forced the o-ring to hard you need a little lube to help it slip on. Parts o-ring is ok in gas.

Huy just hit up a local autoparts store like PepBoys and pick up a Nitrile o ring kit. The kit shouldn't cost more then 10 bucks and there should be a suitable o ring to use in the kit. Its also good to have extra o rings laying around for future use. When you install the new one "slighty" lube the outer edge of the o ring with fresh motor oil to ease the install. I usually use a Q tip dipped in some fresh motor oil. Don't ever due it with the oil.

This is all a reason to cut connection off and use a hose with two clamps to make the union... You guys think this is bad. Take an Evo 8 carrier assembly out! That's a nightmare...

OOPS! Totally forgot about Ray. Ill give him a call. Everytime I call and tell him Rich sent me, he just hangs up the phone cussing
I need to post some pics of that suit on the south forum for you Rich, its been so long since I last cleaned it, its not really orange anymore lol...

Tony, I just dropped into autozone and found a kit of Orings. I think ONE might work, just gotta bring the fubar'd one with me to size against the others to be sure. But ill probably end up using the OEM one just to be certain it fits.

I went to Autozone cuase its down the street and their Oring kits are pretty comprehensive but they are not thick enough bands as an Oring for a replacement. I looked further and asked about Fuel Injection Orings and TA DA, I think I found a good match.

These have a inner diameter of maybe 1mm smaller than the OEM oring that I had pinched. But given its age, im sure that 1mm is bound to occur through some good ol stretching. These are also a bit "tougher." As in they seem to be a bit less elastic than the OEM one. But I think they will work fine.

The part no. on the box just says 800-9212 made by GP Sorensen. Ive got 8 that came in the kit, so if you guys want/need one, just PM me and Ill send it your way.



Ill post some results later if you guys are intrested.

That kit of Orings is about 4 bucks. Forgot to mention that.

Well here we go:

Place the Oring on the ext nipple of the fuel pump.
If you fish enough into the metal part of the assembly, there is a cap to the nipple, place that on top of the oring. It should sorta "snap" or fit very snuggly on the end of the nipple.

So in layers from the bottom, you have the sliding plastic piece on the nipple, the oring sandwiched and then the nipple cap.



I used some fuel injector cleaner as lube cuase I had some laying around. The kind you add to the gas to help clean the gunk out of the injectors. Doubt if it really works, but I think it worked well to help lube the ring as I squeezed it into the assembly.
A quick check for me was to literally Blow and Suck on the pressure feed nipple on the top of the assembly. (stop thinking dirty...) You shouldnt be able to blow as the pressure should be sealed. You should be able to suck freely. LOL MAKE SURE THERE ISNT ANY FUEL IN THE PUMP OR ASSEMBLY when doing this, I didnt make the mistake but someone might. If you ingest fuel, go smoke a cig it will help to make you feel better.

I jumped the fuel pump and heard it priming. But didnt have the FPGauge connected to know if there is enough pressure. Hope everything is working! Ill know soon enough.
