Which factory alarm? The FD come with an alarm stock (albeit a very primitive one) and it is not programmable.

I bought a Viper keyfob that my local car audio shop programmed to work the stock alarm. I haven't had any problems with it in a couple years now.

The 15+ year old factory alarm is pretty old school (read: primitive) though. If I didn't have a secure place to park my car, I'd drop a couple hundred on a nice one from this century.

I don't understand this. There is nothing to control in the factory alarm.

heh, Now I'm confused too. My car had an alarm when I bought it used. I've been in, out and all around the thing in the last couple years and I don't see an aftermarket alarm anywhere.
I went down to my local car-audio installers to have an alarm put in, and the tech asked me if I'd like to save a few bucks and just buy a Viper fob to control the existing one. I said yes and the rest is history.

I must have an aftermarket alarm under a seat or something, because if you try to open the door through an open window when the car's locked, the thing goes nuts with the horn beeping, and headlights popping up and down.

The factory alarm will do that. However, I don't know what you mean by control it - it does not have any receiver or control mechanism to enable or disable it. The only way to disable it is to pull some harnesses.

most likely he got aftermarket keyless entry or perhaps aftermarket alarm installed. So, they just upgraded keyfob.

^^^ Exactly.

Keyless entry, and now I'm able to lock/arm and unlock the car from the keyfob. That's what I meant by "control the existing one".

That isn't controlling the alarm. It's controlling the lock on the door.

eee-xactly

As a mater of fact - stock alarm system can easily be augmented with tilt sensors, glass break sensors, etc.

Afterall - aftermarket alarm is nothing by replacement for stock alarm using OE door, hood and hatch switches.

I vote for stock alarm. It's OK. And if somebody will want to steal car it can be braken as easy as aftermarket one.
