FD Testing Event: November 25th Virginia International Raceway

VIR Event #2! Monday November 25th - Full Track Day

We now have a tentative date for the next event, Monday November 25th. For more on the last event, see:

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...ceway-1031744/

We had a great time so we wanted to do it again. We have reserved the North Course for the full day:

http://virnow.com/files/2011/11/Nort...MapCorners.jpg

The North Course is a great one and has some of the best turns and straight-aways at VIR. It's 2.25 miles of an awesome experience and it will be a blast to see all RX7s out on the course. I will have my single turbo 3 rotor there and I will let the others confirm their attendance, including Gordon's NA 3 rotor and Logan's 4 rotor. Fritz Flynn and Peter Hahn will be providing course expertise in their usual "Stig" style. If we can pull it off, we'll do the "comparo" event we planned for the last time, where we will attempt to compare the various levels of rotary upgrades to try to draw some conclusions. This fell apart on us in May so it's still our goal, but if it doesn't happen, that is okay too. Regardless, it's just great fun to hang out with fellow rotor heads at VIR, considered by most to be the best tracking venue on the East Coast. And yes, V8s are welcome!

So, if you attended the last event in May, you know how much fun it was. If you didn't attend, then now is your chance to join in and have a great time.

Event Details
We will try to run the event like we did the last one and keep it informal. We'll have the track for the full day so there will be plenty of track time available for all. To rent the track, it will cost $4,500 (which is pretty cheap for VIR), so we are looking to get 15 guys that want to track to sign up at $300 apiece. If we can get more to participate, we can lower the cost but at $300, it's a screaming deal for a closed track session. Just us and no one else

So, if you if have tracked your car at other events, and want to join in, pm Fritz Flynn with your details (car, track experience). He will make the call as to your status for driving solo. If you are a newbie like me, then we can still get you out on the track but we will need to assign you to one of the guys that can serve as an instructor for you. Ideally, we can assign everyone to "run" groups and make this a little more formal than last time. We want everyone to have fun but to also be safe and not get hurt. Remember, this is not a grudge match where we are trying to "beat" someone else, it's an opportunity to get together for one last time before the season ends. And if we can make this one a success like the last, then I'd propose we make this an official twice a year event and slot it around DGRR, Rotorfest, and the Chris Carlisi event so we have a full season of all things rotary.

If you haven't tracked before, we will try to have a run group designated just for you, where you will be paired up with an instructor to help you learn the course and driving techniques. We will also have an instruction session in the morning before beginning the event so you can learn in a classroom setting about driving and in particular, the North Course. I've only tracked now a handful of times but it is great fun, especially if you respect the power of your car and if you know your driving limitations. Tracking is all about learning the characteristics and limits of your car and then going out and repeating what your instructor discusses with you. Speed will come with repetition, skill, and experience and there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking it easy when you are learning.

If you don't want to track, but wish to show up and hang out or maybe get out on the course with an experienced driver, then this is the event for you as well. I think we all had a blast last time taking advantage of the generosity of Fritz, Peter, Bill, Dan and a few others, so we will try to make this happen again.

Finally, I'm speaking with a few potential sponsors for the event so we can try to have a food tent setup for our use. No prizes or anything like that, but food and drink during the day would be great

To make this happen, we need to hear from you as soon as possible, preferably this week. So, use the signup sheets below and let's get this party started! If you want to track at $300 for the full day, please place your name on the below list and pm Fritz Flynn with your car and driving details.

Look forward to making this happen and to seeing you on November 25th!

Do you have technical requirements for driver and vehicle for the track event? If so, can you please share them here?

^ Safety first here and we want the day to go well with everyone going home in one piece. So, what is qualified? Fritz says we need to have advanced drivers who have track experience so we don’t have to worry about any unnecessary agricultural research, aka going off track. ☺ So, White Group (upper intermediate and early advanced drivers), Black Group (advanced drivers) and Red Group (instructors). If you are a Green or Blue Group driver, then sign up under the "Tracking But Not Experienced" group and we will try to match you up with an instructor level driver.

In any event, pm Frtiz Flynn with your background and he can then determine in which group to put you.

As to technical requirements for your car, please see the following VIR inspection form found here and come with the top portion completed and signed by your mechanic. Fritz and Peter will perform the additional track inspections unless VIR personnel does it:

http://www.shoclub.com/SHOconvention...ech%20Form.pdf

Also review the info on proper dress for tracking (long sleeves, long pants of natural fibers, closed toe shoes) and the helmet information. You need a Snell 2005/2010 helmet to drive so be prepared for this.

Maybe Fritz or Peter can give some pointers here as well on brakes, fluids, etc.

Just to add to that I BELIEVE it needs to be a SNELL SA 2005/2010 helmet , As tehre are snell MA 2005/2010 ?? which are for motorcycle helmets which a sfar as I've heard are no good for actual track driving .

Also the link is broken LOL

^ You are correct about Snell. Also, here is a good link to a technical inspection form:

It's pretty basic stuff.

Yep you will need a 2005 or newer snell SA helmet.

The track is being rented as a test and tune day so there won't be much room for instruction which is why most of the attendees should be advance drivers and or instructors. If some instructor qualified drivers sign up and volunteer to take some inexperienced drivers under their wing we will be able to absorb some beginner drivers but Pete and I will have our hands full with David and Gordon alone so I don't expect there to be much room for beginner drivers.

So with that said if you are an advanced driver and would like to join some FDs/RX7s on track this will be a fun event. David pretty much spelled out what an advanced driver is but to be 100% clear you must have permission to sign up for any HPDE event that you attend as a solo driver in other words advanced driver with no instructor needed. NASA group 3, Porsche white group, BMW A group etc.....

If you want lots of track time and or are traveling and want to really take advantage of your time at VIR sign up for the BMW event the Sat and Sun before this event and just stay through Monday to enjoy the FD test event as well

IMPORTANT: If you want to sign up for the BMW event prior to this event do it now because it's almost full.

Typical tech form and car prep list for on track driving would look like this:

TECHNICAL INSPECTION FORM

Engine Compartment / Interior:

___ Battery securely fastened ___ Brake lights: all working

___ Brake fluid: level, fluid fresh, system bled ___ Brake pedal: firm
Date of last fluid change: _________

___ No visible fluid leaks (gas, oil, coolant, hydraulics) ___ Throttle linkage: no sticking/ sloppiness

___ Coolant system: level, condition of hoses, no leaks ___ Windshield wipers: working and good condition

___ Pressure test radiator cap ___ Mirrors: left-hand exterior required

___ All V-belts: proper tightening, inspect for wear, cracks, fraying

On lift and under car

___ Condition of tires, sidewall and tread. Min. 2/32” tread. H, V, or Z speed rating recommended.

___ Check wheel bearings for excessive play.

___ Brake pads & calipers: Adequate pad thickness (at least ½ pad left). Rotors within factory specs. Calipers working
properly. Hoses, lines, calipers clean and dry.

___ Steering linkage, suspension: No excessive play. Suspension mounting: no cracks or excessive rust.

___ Check rear engine & transmission seals for excessive seepage.

___ Check for hydraulic leaks at wheels and clutch slave cylinder.

___ Check half-shaft bolts for looseness ___ Wheels not bent, no cracks

___ Check transmission and differential fluid levels ___ Exhaust: no under-car leaks.

___ Windshield free of large cracks

___ Seat belts: both front seat belts are properly operable and in good condition.

___ If roll bar: adequate padding required on all roll bar/cage installation at any possible contact with driver or

I'm posting so I can remind myself to "make a mental note." I'm extremely interested in doing this but work will be the factor if I can make it or not.

To everyone else, this is a quite rare opportunity to have an entire day with people you know or know of. It's also incredible to track with all the same cars! DO IT!!!

^ Damn you for actually checking what I posted Seriously, thanks and hope this one works:

I'd second the notion you won't get a chance like this to have an RX7 only event on a premier track like VIR. It's an absolutely fantastic venue and a great track. For me the best part at the last event was meeting everyone that I "knew" through the forum. Great to put faces to internet presences. And to think, the rotary guys didn't fight with the V8 guys, who woulda thought?

We do need to hear soon from those that want to attend as we need to officially reserve the track so decide "yes" and put yourself on the list.

^ That is awesome Hoi. Look forward to seeing you out on the track.

I have two thoughts, based on member feedback. First, we can offer a "track experience" where you can take your cars out on the course in a controlled environment. We'd have a pace car out in front to help guide the group in a higher speed yet safe manner. Would anyone be interested in this? If so, put your name on a new list and let's see if we can make this happen. I think this is very possible and maybe we'd ask for $25 per car or so. Also, you wouldn't need a helmet.

Second, if you are an inexperienced driver like me but want to get out and track your car, how about putting yourself on the list with me? Let's see how many would be interested in this and if there is enough interest, then maybe we can figure out something. Sound okay?

Finally, if you are an experienced driver and are sitting on the fence about attending, I'd encourage you to commit to the event and sign up. This is the only event I know of where you can be out on a closed track with only RX7 drivers. How cool is that? I know it's a bit of late notice, but let's make this happen!

^IF you are coming, but are afraid of ruining your car or inexperienced, SIGN UP for this. It is a blast to get out on the track with your car at something above highway speed in a safe CONTROLLED environment.

Also, IF there is a photographer in the group that could take a photo of the cars on the track, perhaps offering 8x10 glossy prints for a small fee, that would be AWESOME.

I will put in a $ contribution. Just need to figure out flights to Virginia from Tampa.
Is there an airport close to the track?

^ Hey Snook, that's great but hold off on booking until we are sure this will happen. We need to have 15 drivers signed up and we are very short of that at the moment.

So, if you are interested in this, we need to know by the end of this week or we will need to release the course. It's a really fun opportunity to be out on the track with only RX7 guys so let's make this happen

^ Thanks for signing up. Now we need 10 more guys in the next week to make this happen

We want to do this twice each year anyway, so I love the idea of wrapping this around DGRR, on the Monday or Tuesday after the event. I'm thinking we could get a caravan going of guys leaving DGRR on Sunday morning, taking a last run through the Tail of the Dragon (thanks Superdan for this idea) and then caravaning to VIR. It would be about a 5.5 hour trip from the Tail to VIR so that would be a fun day. Then we could spend the day at the track and the next day, everyone go home.

Interesting idea. What do you guys think?

^Sounds like a plan! I've never been to the Dragon event so this would be a very nice weekend.
