I was just browsing eBay and other car classified sites... and made an observation...

From what I see.... a MKIV N/A Supra would run in the neighborhood of 15,000 (thats a good price). That runs about 15.1 in the 1/4 (for those who don't know).

But, I went to check out the FD's.. and my my, they are cheap these days. I see some for around 9,000-11,000 that dont even have bids! Now, it puzzles me how a car that is faster (13.9 or so in the 1/4) is CHEAPER than a slower, heavier car. And honestly, the looks are moot because both cars have similar curves, and amazing body styles...

an NA supra runs mor ein the range of 20K if it's pretty decent miles and good condition. Basically a supra runs 10K over blue book while an FD runs a few grand under. the reason is that the toyotas have a better resale value in general. We can all agree that an MKIV supra with say 90K will probally last a bit longer than an RX7 with the same miles and will probally still have the original motor. The demand for supras are higher too for some reason. A highly modded supra sells for upwards of $70K while a really modded RX7 sells for not even half of that. Sucks, but that's market value.

i would not pay anywhere near 20k for a n/a supra. i could get a good condition rx7 and still do some reliability mods.

 

Supra pricing still has me kind of dumbfounded... Must of been the fast and furious right??? But the demand is there for the car and there is only so much supply left around now a days. Which means people will be willing to pay more for that car. And for a mint, low mileage one it will fetch even more.

The FD on the other hand. Yeah they are selling for much lower when compared to a Supra. But when you look at all the FDs that are $9K to $12K range they are pretty beaten up. There isnt much demand for beaten up FDs. But I believe there is a demand for low mileage, mint FDs and I think they will go for well over blue book value.

 

There are less Supras then RX-7s in the country, especially Supra TTs. Funny thing is there are 5 MKIV Supras on my street.

 

yeah, try finding an MKIV supra that is twin turbo and 6-speed with under 50,000 miles. Good luck. Funny how both cars sold for close to the same price when new...hopefully the FD won't lose more value.

 

Actually, until they lowered the price by $10k in 97(?), TT Supras were $50k. This is about $10k more than a Touring/PEP FD. That, along with the Toyota factor, explains part of the price difference. I think a lot of the rest of the difference has to do with the ease of upgrading Supras vs FDs.

ANY Toyota will always hold it's value very well.

I have also NEVER seen a beat up SupraTT. You don't want to know how many beat up FDs I have seen Why is it that Supra owners take better care of their ride as opposed to an FD owner? I won't get into that. Fact remains there are more plastered FDs out there than Supras.

While working at a dealership, I had the chance to go to one of the nation's largest auction houses. I saw MINT FDs there being auctioned 50% over WHOLESALE value. I saw mint 93s with 50k miles going over $15,000, and I saw a 95 with less than 10k miles auction at $25k. When I saw a mint FD, believe me, I saw it do GOOD money.
