FD hurt, I'm fine - was in accident yesterday

A guy ran a stop sign and I clipped him (97 Honda Civic) in the rear wheel/quarter panel spinning him 180 deg (pitman maneuver!).
I fear the Honda fared much better than the FD :-(
I barely felt the collision since I had a 5pt harness and a racing seat.
I was going around 20mph, I had recently left a stopsign and was accelerating at a slow pace.
Pictures are worth a 1000 words so I'll shutup and post :-)

So... I guess I'll need a 99 gt bumper, mazdaspeed carbon fiber vented hood... any suggestions?

Here are the prices of some of the stock items needed, from parts.com
Fender Left $238.05
Fender Right $231.35
Bumper cover $618.75
Headlight Lid Left $80.70
Hood $889.70
Lens and housing Right $193.75
Lens and housing Left $193.75
Total: $2,446.05

That sucks. At least it looks like the damage isnt toooo bad, probably not much structural any ways.

Is that your computer strapped down in the passenger seat? How did it fare? Good thing it was wearing a seat belt.

It isn't too bad but I'll bet you'll be surprised how much that costs to fix. I'm guessing $7K.

Wanna sell it?

Glad you weren't injured. Fenders, headlights, hood, and a bumper and you should be okay. I recommend removing the ECU and paying the push charge at the body shop. Too many people have lost motors to body shops that joyride.

Mine was hit and run 6 wks ago and I get my car back today! The body shop painted the whole car except the rear bumper, which is not bad. I'm thinking of saran-wrapping it and leaving it in the garage

Hey look at it this way. Your car gets a face lift and a brad new paint job!.

Turbojeff: Yeah that's about what I figured also, the little stuff adds up although I might have a few of the peices from my parts car. And hell no I don't want to sell it :-)

Rotoboy661: Yes we both have full coverage. I want his to pay for it though, I don't want my rates going up.

Borken93: Yeah that's what I figured. Good idea on the ECU! I have a PowerFC, maybe I can put it in limp mode or something?

Tom93R1: The computer is fine, I'm using it right now. If that had been hurt I would be in deep trouble, that's my livelyhood and has all my programming work on it. Hmm, better back that up more often!

Wow amazing what a 20 mph roll can do to a vehicle just makes you wonder...

99 front end
Mazdaspeed hood hell get the whole kit if you want
Did it damage the intercooler or oil cooler or anything?

Funny - he does have prints but even funnier you said racoon!

It means that you (running away) have zoomed in super close and identified the prints as actual racoons which would mean you are someone who can tell what a racoon print is (which I am guessing are not a whole heck of alot in the world much less on this forum could do) or you assumed the prints were racoons which means you probably live somewhere where racoons crawl over high performance japanese sports cars regularly (which again is not very common as far as I know).

I dont usually post my observations of posts (I think it is very similar to the people who pick out every detail of any picture posted to the forum which I sometimes find ammusing but mostly annoying) but this one seemed fun enough to mention!

Oh and sorry to see the car damage jedon. Glad you both are ok and have insurance. I am sure the suggested death sentence above is probably not in order since it was most likely an accident....And even if it was on purpose the amount of damage only warrants a couple broken legs....

Are those quotes from the dealership? Their insurance company should have to pay full, dealership price in it's repair cost. For my FC, one fender cost the guys insurance $366.87. If you include all the paint-matching costs, etc. it shot up to $1,200.

Either way, I went to a junkyard and got a fender for $50 and the entire car repainted.

Aftermarket parts, i.e. mazdaspeed hood, are actually cheaper than the dealer stock parts.

That is a good start, figure that you'll need these parts too:

bumper reinforcement ~$400
a BUNCH of little brackets that attach to the bumper~ $300
The hood latch ~$150 (no kidding)
Core support ~$150
Belly pan? ~$125
R1 brake duct ~$95
Fender liner ~$150

All that plastic stuff bolts to the bumper (belly pan, R1 ducts, etc), if the bumper moved over it likely damaged the plastic parts too.

So parts cost for insurance purposes is approaching $4k, paint and labor add up quickly too, $7K might be low. A FD getting even lightly hit in front (like yours) is almost a total since there are so many parts and parts cost is high. Headlights list for about $500 EA.

Let the insurance cut you a check then buy the parts to repair it yourself, some stuff like the bumper reinforcement is easy to find used.

If your having a shop paint the car buying used parts like fenders are a waste of $$, buy new, the "clean up" time on a used fender wipes out any cost savings.

Finding a good used hood can save some pretty big $$.

The parts I priced were from parts.com, retail price.

turbojeff: I actually have many of those parts like the core support and the hood latch and the bumper reinforcement so that can make my $ go further.

I might need a drivers side oil cooler, that area looks kinda mashed.

I want a CF vented hood and they are cheaper than stock, as is most of the other parts.

Cool.

You'll get a bodyshop estimate for the insurance company, it'll be $7K probably more, using the parts you have you'll end up with mod $$.

Stuff like the core support isn't is usually better to buy new. The old part has to be drilled off, that takes time and usually bends the part up a little. Go for new on those type of parts.

Some CF vented hoods are cheaper than stock and they fit like it too. Get a good quality hood that fits right. A good quality CF hood will cost about the same or a little more than stock.

Thanks for the info about the core support etc.
An appraiser is supposed to come within 2 days, I should have the check by the end of next week. Now I need to find a good body shop.

Unhappy

I feel your pain Jedon. I had almost the exact same thing happen to me about a year ago. A kid in a red civic ran a stop sign while I was coasting down my street and I ran right into his front area. We didn't spin at all just pushed each other away in seperate directions, don't know how you spun the civic like that. But still I'm sorry to hear but at least your ok.

Here is the link to my thread when I got hit and you can go through it and see the pictures and see just how similar this accident really is to mine.

eh, it looks possible.

most of the damage looks like a result of the civic swinging back into him, ie civic driver's momentum, not the FD.

We do have Racoons around here and bears and dear and skunks etc but since we have 3 cats it was most likely them. I'm going to make room in the garage for the FD when it gets out of the hospital :-)

I did a pitman maneuver on him, tapping his rear really spun him around since he was moving faster than me and he is front wheel drive with all the weight in the fron of the car acting as a pivot point.

RX7SpiritR: I'll check out your thread, thanks. Glad you are okay!
