The Syclone is much harder to find than the FD and the ZR-1, especially unmodded. And they are incredibly capable engines for straight line power and drag racing. They are turbo AWD 4.3L and very easy to tune because all the GM computers can be easily reprogrammed. In some ways it's a Grand National in AWD truck form.
GM put out a notorious TSB to dealerships soon after the Syclone/Typhoon came out. It explained to how to spot modifications to technicians. This is long before people could post drag times on internet car forums...

Yeah, regardless of how the ZR-1 looks that thing sure felt fast. I used to work with a troglodyte who had a nice ZR-1. It pinned me back in the seat the way no other American V-8 ever did.

Recent changes in the FD world are helping to edge this car further toward serious co
1) lots of v8s on ebay probably 20% of the FDs listed have v8s. The more v8s people drop in this car the fewer clean unharmed rotaries to choose from.
2) as gordon often points out the bar bell effect is becoming more and more pronounced because the clean low mileage cars are at 20k and the beat cars are at 8k. So with lots of sub 10k beat up FDs going to lower income individuals who will not be able to afford the up keep those cars will either be parted or destroyed leaving fewer and fewer available. I seriously believe in 10 years the low mileage well cared for FDs will be worth 30k plus. Of any car developed in the last 20 years I say the FD has the best chance of becoming the next big time collector.
3) The rotary engine may die out all together and it's a very cool engine. The FD would be a great example of what used to be the rotary
Probably lots of other reasons or arguments that would justify this car as a collector so keep your FDs nice and clean because you never know it might be a decent investment and also because it's just fun owning a cool car

Perhaps, but only low mileage examples, less than 30k. How many of those are left in the U.S.? Maybe 50? Full off restorations may also bring a good sum, but very few people restore these cars they right way, plenty of hack jobs and cheap re-sprays

"plenty of hack jobs" exactly hence the ever increasing value and collector status of the well kept ones.
What's great is because this is such a cool car there are still plenty of low mileage garage queens left but this # will of course continue to dwindle which will of course increase the value of the well kept low mileage and restored cars. There are probably 50 currently for sale with 50k or less miles and 100s more in peoples garages.

As to the ZR1 versus the Z06. I just like the doble overhead cam motor and the more sophisticated sound it makes compared to the as-powerful LS6 of the C6 car. For some people pure power or speed are not everything. Its how its done and how it sounds, as well as the numbers.
