So I'm into this 94 engine rebuild. Have the 94 Mazda Workshop manual, and several others.
Questions-
1. Page C-76, item 8, says "Install the drive gear so that the chamfered surface facing the housing". I'll be dammed if I can find a 'chamfered surface' on the drive gear, either side. What are they talking about? Pictures would help.
2. Same page, next item, 'new front oil seal' installation. Does the spring side of the seal face up (front) of the engine, or down (toward the engine insides)?
3. Have questions about how to raise oil pressure as I installed the 2 Atkins spray nozzle crank mod. The oil pressure "control valve", I'm told can use washers to raise pressure (or diff spring?), but how placed and lbs increase/thickness washer? I'm also informed that won't work by itself and that I have to mod the oil pan "oil regulator valve" in a similar fashion? What's the story on how this is done, and by how much?
4. What size are the bellhousing to engine bolts? The cap bolts with 17mm heads? Thread size and lengths?
Appreciate any info that you guys have. This is the second engine switch I've done on FDs, but the first FD engine rebuild.
Marc
No direct knowledge, but from your photo that piece looks to me like it's symmetrical, i.e., the same facing either way unless there is no chamfer on the other side. So maybe they changed the design to chamfers on both sides to make it impossible to install incorrectly.

with the old engines, which had a Distributor/CAS the gear direction matters, but on the REW it just drives the metering pump, so it really doesn't matter as there is no timing

Here is my gear from my FD engine. No chamfers AT ALL, either side....
