guys, usually scammers will go to autotrader.com and find a really nice FD. Then they will copy and save the pics from the ad. Then they will phish for peoples ebay accounts (if you have email, you will get spam email from these jackasses trying to lift everything from ebay accounts to banking info) Then once they get all the info they need, they will setup a fake ebay account or a legit one that has been stolen. Then they will post all of this info.
The reason why they choose to list the car with pre-approval only on ebay is to filter out 1. people who try and stop scammers by over bidding 2. get your contact info so they can email you directly and try and 'sell' you the car for a 'deal' typically requiring you to use western union. (one of my favorite parts is that they will try and convince you western union is secure and when you suggest paypal they say that someone stole THEIR account and paypal has suspended it- ALL BS by the way).
Anyway, avoid it like the plague. The lesson is, if it is too good to be true. It probably is.
good luck.

Another way to find out if this is fraud is to try and go through with the deal. I found a simular situation on e-bay and went through all the stages of purchasing the car except for sending the seller my money. The auction was almost exactly like this one where you have to be a pre-approved bidder. I asked to be added as a bidder but they never replyed to me until after the auction. They then went on saying how they want to make sure that everyone is protected so they insisted on using e-bay. After I gave them my personal information I soon recieved an e-mail from aw-confirm@motors.ebay.com that had all of the e-bay trademarks and logos and looked to be very legit. This e-mail gave me info on how to pay for the car. I had to wire the money into a trust account in california. Upon recieving the car I had 3 days to get a inspection done, after that 3 days I would then give the people an okay at the trust account and they would then send the money to the seller.
I thought this seemed odd so I contacted e-bay about this. They said that e-bay never uses trust accounts, so that it was a fraud. Also, no matter what, if you are using e-bay to purchase the vehicle this auction would show up under your "auctions won" section of your e-bay account. If it doesn't show up there then you aren't using e-bay to buy the car and you will not be covered by insurance.
I also found that if you insist on picking up the car in person and they give you excuses of being out of town for work or whatever and that they can't meet you to give you the car than it is a fraud as well. One big thing to look for is them saying that the price includes shipping to your location.

This is not about ebay but a year and a half ago I was looking into some good deals(to good to be true) on a Mark IV Supra TT and a 300zx TT on Autotrader, I had some concerns abouts the payments and I recieved the same email word for word from supposedly two seperate people. The only thing different in the email was the names. Good thing I checked on it before spending any money. You really need to see the car before you buy it, something I learned the hard way, when I bought a FD off ebay which the deal did not go through because it was uninspectable and a few other things wrong(never actually saw the car in person). I finally found a good deal that was real and got the car that a I really wanted, my 93 VR RX-7.
And that has to be a scam, you can't find poor condition FDs for that price.

SCAM not so sure -maybe- what is really weird is that the seller is ID verified - unless they lifted someone elses account for the listing it is not that easy to get the logo. Says - cash on delivery. Last it has ended - typically a good way to advertise when you want to dump a car quick. Yes I agree price is way too low so who knows.

Also - if I'm making a purchase THAT big, I want to talk to the person on the phone at length. I would NEVER buy a car just over E-mail.

As I said above, contact him and insist on picking up the car in person within a couple of days with cash in hand. If they agree to this than I would personally think about putting the effort into getting the car. But if they say something about being out of town for work, or that they aren't near the car then don't bother.

I live in Greensboro so I will schedule an appointment to see it and I know exactly where the car was photographed in Greensboro at ManPower .
I will see for my own eyes if it is a scam and report back.

This is weird... I know of someone who just got scammed out of 5g's on ebay, for an FD... I had read this thread when it started and never though this guy would fall for it...
I feel bad for him... But come on, 5g's for an FD. (Pee eewh, fishy)
He already took care of as much as he can with the authorities
Oh, BTW the "seller" of the vehicle was some old man who had no clue what the f*** was goin on.

I thought I would play with him a little;
His response,
Hi,
I'm really sorry for this late reply but I've been very busy lately and away from a computer. The car is located in Greensboro NC. It has all the papers as well as the service book. About the car 92K miles on board, (but the new engine has only 12K miles), I can say that does not drip, leak, lean, smoke, pull to one side, vibrate, or make funny noises. It has never been in ANY wreck, has never hit a curb, was never hit while parked, the alignment is perfect, it tracks smooth at any speed. It has a clean carfax which confirms the accuracy of the mileage.
It has a clear title and it will be signed and notarized on your name as soon as the payment will be completed. I want this transaction to be as smooth as possible as I am caught in the middle of some very important events and have very few time at my disposal. The price is only $4,850.00 including shipping costs anywhere in the continental US and insurance charges.
Regarding the payment I am aware of the buyer's protection and we will use Ebay's motors vehicle purchase protection program which will hold the payment until you receive the car. To complete payment the buyer must have cash available.
If you are interested in this car please provide me the following information's necessary to take a decision:
-your full name and address for shipping
-eBay ID
-your phone #
-any negative feedback and if so .... for what reason.
Once again I apologies for requesting this but I need to be sure I am dealing with interested people as I really don't have much time to spear.
Thanks,
Theodore Bachmann
Mine,
I told him I lived in Greensboro and would pick it up tommorrow with cash.
His response;
Hello again,
I said the car is in Greensboro, but did not said I'm there also. Sorry for that. I'm a hotel manager, actually in Hawaii and will not be there to hand it over or something like that. This is why we'll work through Ebay Motors Customer Department and they will keep the money until the purchase is final and you test it and accept it. Sorry for not being clear from the beginning, my fault.
Let me explain you how the Ebay process works.
The process works something like this:
1. You send the requested amount to an Ebay motors representative.
2. Ebay will confirm me that you have made the payment.
3. I will ship you the car so you can test drive it.
4. If you will not get exactly the same car that you have viewed in the ad and also a clean title, you will receive all your money back from Ebay motors.
5. If everything is ok, Ebay motors will get the approval from you to release me the founds. If you agree with this process, please let me know your full name and address and I will forward the details to Ebay motors.
Regards,
Theodore
So I told him I would just send him cash and he could send me the car when he recieved it.
His response;
In order to finalize our transaction I will need to know your full name and your full address and I will make all the necessary arrangements with eBay Motors and they will send you the invoice for our transaction. Once again, shipping is free.
Thanks, Theodore
I'm not done playing with him yet
