Are FC and FD starters interchangable?

I have searched.

Here are some pics I grabbed off of Ebay. On the left are FD starters, on the right are FC starters. I can't see a reason why one wouldn't interchange with the other. Yet apparently they are listed in parts books as seperate parts. Can anyone shed light on this subject?

AFAIK, a starter from the mid 70s will bolt up to the latest rx7, but maybe there are differences such as power output.

Look at the opening near the starter gear. See how the FD starter has the bubble just before it opens up and the FC starter doesn't? That might make a difference if it would work or not. I have never tried it, but I don't think I would take my chances. If it doesn't then you have an extra paper weight/bookend. Just my .02

I just noticed that the solenoid is in a completely different pos, most likely it will bump into something.
