I was bored today so I decided to go ahead and do the "fan mod" that I have been putting off for some time. I pulled the kick panel, unbolted the ECU, and even went as far as removing the ECU completely. I do not have a loose wire anywhere. For reference I have a 93 R1. The fans have never come on after shut down, but do come on when the A/C is engaged and/or the blower switch is turned to 3 or 4. So I know my fans do work. Is there anyway to physicaly see if the factory fan upgrade has been done. Please help, I dont know where else to look. I will post a pic of the area I am looking at if the forum will accept it.

 

You may have to poke around a bit, but it should be there. As I recall, it is a black wire with a yellow stripe. On the end of the wire is a plastic connector, that will connect to a spade connector. I don't remember if it is a male or female.

EDIT: Just looked at your pic. I don't think its one of the wires connecting to the ECU. Look above where the ECU was, and towards the front of the car.

I checked the wires coming from the ECU, nothing. I looked behind the ECU, infront of the ECU, and above the ECU, nothing. I have read on some how to's that there should be a small black box behind the original ECU location with a 5 or 6 pin connector which has the connection. I dont have a black box or any small box for that matter behind the ECU. I cant figure this out. Im getting frustrated with this "simple" project.

That link is to have a manual override switch so the fans can be turned on while driving as needed. I am trying to do the mod which lets the fans run on low for 10 minutes after the car is shut off. I do eventually plan on doing the other mod, when time permits.

 

I don't know what to tell you. I had no problem getting mine hooked up. Perhaps the previous owner did something with it. It should be there.

 

IIRC, didn't Mazda change the main loom in the later cars which eliminates the fan relay pigtail? That would explain it since you have a '94 and "SidewaysR1" has a '93.

A better mod is to use the Miata Thermoswitch. The Thermoswitch is what determines the temperature to enable the fans. Using the Miata version lowers that temperature down to around 210F from the stock setting of 226F. Once it's installed, it's automatic, no need to flip any switches or remember to turn any switch off (people have run down their batteries from leaving the fans running).

 

Many people have done this mod on 93 model cars. I don't think that the year model is the problem.

 

mine was hard to fine. its like a single wire, just poke around and make sure you have alot of light, its a wire with a rectangular connector thingy on the end going no where. look further up. and not only is it behind the ecu, it may also be behind the wires of the ecu closer to the far right side of car touching the wall.

 

I'm not saying it can't be done, but it may have to be done differently if you have the different loom. The reason I bring this up is because I asked my rotary mechanic to do the fan mod the last time I was at his shop for servicing and he said I was missing the pigtail and I had to go to the dealer for the part.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasnt tht a recall that mazda did, and it had something to do with the fans...Maybe it wasnt done to your car yet..

 

yes it was a recall, and small black box would be behind (and attached to?) the stock 93 ecu. mazda can check by vin number if recall was done ... don't know if they would still do it though.

the voodoo site mod doesn't need the recall work, but you then don't get the timer effect from the black box, where fans can run on low for 10 minutes after hot shutdown. nice to control underhood temps aft shutdown on hot days in public parking when opening the hood is not an option.

 

It is in fact a Mazda recall item. Check with your local dealer and supply him with your VIN number. They should be able to tell if the recall was done by a Mazda dealer or certified Mazda mechanic.

 

Thanks for all the responses. I will check with a mazda dealer or call Mazda directly to check what has been done as far as recalls. I am also curious to find out if the other recalls have been taken care of (fuel line, brake line, ECU). I am also going to get ahold of the guy I purchased the car from and see what maintenance paperwork he has on the vehicle. I have only had the car for about 1.5 months and want to get this all straight ASAP.

 

Not sure if its been answered before or not, but is it possible to do both fan mods, so i can turn the fans on whenever i want when driving, and also be able to time the fans to run on low speed for 10 minutes after the car is shut off.

Yes, doing both mods is possible, and that was my original plan, but since I am missing the mysterious black box, I cant do the 10 min. after shutdown mod, and will only do the "direct" control mod.

 

Thats awesome. It sounds like both would work pretty well together.

So if we dont have the black box, we can't perfom the 10 minute fan mod? And was that a recall mazda had to perform and was it needed on 93's? I havent checked for the box yet, but if i dont have it, does mazda still perform the recall or am i screwed?
