fan control and temperature monitoring

thanks for reading. my question is what do you think is the best way to monitor AND control fd temperatures.

from threads i've read the choices seem to be

power FC/datalogit
HKS/Pivot/Greddy fan controller

for a street driven mostly stock FD is it worthwhile to invest in a fan controller or datalogit to set fans to come on at lower temp or to increase fan speed.

should i install a fan controller? or am i okay with just a water temp meter to monitor. what about a oil temp meter, can this be used in lieu of water temperature?

i've read dale's review on the hks controller, seems like a good mod for a good price...

but then the most expensive choice... power fc setup.. any worthwhile benefits of installing a FC in a stock fd?

which setup is more suitable for my situation? whats the best bang for the buck?

If you are keeping your car essentially stock with no future upgrading plans, I would recommend installing the 2nd gen thermoswitch and a water temp gauge and that's it.

Alex I had no problems after installing a Miata thermoswitch and a Defi w. temp. It monitors well and besides heat soak it never goes above 190 - 200F max, I now have the PFC because I have modified to the point I need one, so that will throw the icing on the cake.

I'm still a big fan of the HKS fan controller - it's been in my car for a year now, and temps are ALWAYS where I want them, even on hot days with AC on in traffic.

The FC thermoswitch helps a LOT, but you have better control over the fans with the fan controller. Being able to set the temps they switch on and when they switch off is a big plus, too. My car is normally around 85 deg. C, and on a VERY hot day maybe low 90's. I NEVER see 100 deg temps any more.

^Agreed. I also have a "street driven mostly stock" car. No problems even on 100+ days. Some other "best bang for the buck" things:
Flush w/ fresh coolant
Some foam in any gaps to help ducting
Clean your oil cooler(s) and comb out any bent fins

linearize the stock gauge...if you want your car looking fairly stock as well.
