Question experiences with Turbo City rebuild kits ?

Good or bad... I read the post about the actual rebuild, just wondering if they are going to run like new after the rebuild or if there is going to be problems.

Thanks

Scott

I personally have never done it, but from what I've heard from a couple buddies that have...they are basically like new. You just have to make sure that when you take it apart, you keep it in order as you do. Also, make sure not to bend the fins. They told me that's a common problem. But overall, they told me its a noticeable difference in the feel of boost.

The key to a successful rebuild is to have the Turbo wheels/shafts balanced.

areXseven... It was your thread that i read through... How did they turn out, you just marked the fins right ? Or did you have to get them balanced ?

Thanks,

Scott

Well,...I thought I had marked everything precisely,...BUT apparently I didn't. At first it was a complete nightmare trying to figure out what the problem was. The horrible whine could be heard a mile away. I took off and installed the turbos 5 times in 3-weeks. I never did find the problem.

I shipped the cartridges to Garry at Turbo City. He balanced them and replaced the little plate seal which I apparently broke by over tightning the Compressor Nut.

They came back boosting like new. No more whining from the Turbos,...and me!!

apparently from what i learned, most of these hitachi cores cannot be rebuilt. i had mine done at majestic turbos, after four trys, it still smoked. sold those had to get new turbos.

if u check with alot of rebuilders, no one has those cores anymore. thats because so many go bad, that they cant be rebuilt. you might try to rebuild them, just be prepared to have to get a new set or have them rebuilt again. rebuilds around 800, u might try to find a good set of used ones.

There really arent any good cores anymore, most twins have been rebuild multiple times already. Everytime a engine blows on a 3rd gen the turbos get rebuild.

In addition there is only one supplier that makes a rebuild kit for the twins and some of the parts in it dont spec properly. BNR ran into that problem, thats why they stopped doing basic rebuilds that use the stock bearing housing and started replacing the entire bearing housings and all with brand new aftermarket bearing housings. As far as I know he's the only shop that does that. M2 used to sell some twins that had aftermarket bearing housings but they no longer sell them. I dont know if they had problems or what. And just in case anyone is wondering the bearing housing used by the old M2 twins and the ones used by BNR are completely different.

Stephen

Who the **** charged you $800 for a rebuilt turbo? My friends turbo stang need his Garrett T3 and T4 and I rebuilt them for him for $200 + turbo city rebuild kits. I thought that was being pricey. Guess I could make some serious money from doing this. (I am 15, $200 = 1/4 way to a set of new pistons)

$800-1000 would be for rebuilt "twin" turbos. The rebuild kits are about $150 per kit (so $300 of that cost is just for the kit). The rest you are paying for the labor and to make sure the wheels/shafts are balanced.
