experiences with the digital autometer temp gauge??

I have the autometer digital temp gauge, sender threaded into the front of the filler neck in front of the thermostat, grounded at the grounding point on the upper intake manifold, and powered by one of the extra power points at the top of the fuse panel under the dash. Lately, it will work fine, for a while, then all of a sudden, the temp will plummit to a flashing LO, then after a while, sometimes it rises back up to normal, then crashes down again. What the hell, is this thing just a POS??

maybe it is the sender unit wiring
