So I've been recently researching modifications for a completely bone stock FD-3S that I was able to obtain. I'm getting most of the kinks into order as my car is currently in a shop getting a full diagnostic. I'm not too concerned into cosmetics as I am more interested in performance. That being said, I've come to understand that one of the easiest way to gain some HP would be modifying the exhaust.

I've been looking at a series of exhausts, including HKS high performance, the Blitz Nur-Spec, and the Apexi N1 until I came across the Greddy Racing Ti and felt drawn into the sound of it.

I'm not completely familiar with the many exhausts made for the RX-7, especially within the argument on performance vs sound; so my question would be, what is a well recommended exhaust with a great, but not ricey, sound?

I hear the greddy TI exhaust is extremely light and sounds good. I BELIEVE its on the loud side. Alot of people will tell you that the racing beat exhaust espically the duals are very quiet and very well made, but on the heavy side compared to other exhausts.

My 2 cents. Its just an exhaust..

 

If you want the best get SMB.

As stated above its just an exhaust. You can spend twice as much and get a few more hp out of it but at the end of the day its your money. I know I'd rather save that money and spend it on other mods or things.

well i am looking for very loud and very powerful. what is the best choice for that. (mind you on a R&R guys budget)

 

3" straight pipe from the cat back. It's SCCA SS class legal. Any decent muffler shop should be able to fab it for you.

 

You will start to get annoyed trust me

 

FWIW, I have the RB Dual tip. I think it sounds great. I have no idea as to the hp gains, but the sound is sweet.

 

Make sure to tune your FD when modifying the exhaust, because the turbos just love to boost when given little restrictions.

I did a 4 inch straight through exhaust once and my stock FD was boosting over 17 psi, with luck it did not blow the apex seals. Had to chock it down on the tail pipe section to get the boost within safe 10-11 lbs levels.

What are your goals for the car? How old are you?

All of the exhausts you mentioned sound ricey to me. And loud.

If you do a search, you'll see that the favorite exhaust for someone wanting a mellow tone that won't get you hassled by the Po-Po is the Racing Beat. Greddy SP is another one and SMB is another option comparable to the Racing Beat. All of these support high HP goals.

Do spend some time reading the FAQ thread about these topics as the info in there is very relevant and has been discussed many times before.

with an HKS super drager catback

and it's TOO LOUD...

it's almost painful.. I wince at times.. and do my best to feather the throttle on the highway to that point between engine braking and acelleration where it's kind of in "limbo" to keep it quiet

when i slow down and have to accelerate again I loathe it...


if i drive the car for any long periods of time.. I start to feel my ears hurt and almost reach the point where u get the EEEEEEE sound like u been in a club all night..


trust me.. Loud gets Old fast...

especially with the minimal sound deadening and stuff.. windows up or down makes little diff...

 

Sometimes, to appreciate a quiet exhaust, you must first have an ear-splitting one for a while. Eventually you get tired of cops always eying you down, being embarassed to pull into a neighborhood at night b/c you don't want to **** everyone off, the loud droning on the highway, etc. I used to have an Apex'i N1 system, then eventually moved to Racing Beat.

The LAST thing the world needs is some young kid with a ricer-like fart can equipped FD.
To the OP, do everyone a favor and just put a Racing Beat dual tip on. Decent performance gains + stock look + awesome sound...deep and throaty.

Previously I had an Apexi GT exhaust. That was really loud.
Too loud in fact. It failed the Oregon DB test with the cat on.
Without the cat it was, well, loud.

You would get tired of it. Your neighbors and your friends neighbors will definitely not appreciate it.

 

I had the RB dual tip--also loved it. Nice growel and not too loud. My Miata is actually louder.

 

If people want real performance and minimum sound I think they should heavily consider the Tanabe Ultra medallion. It has ceritification to be under 95db so that if ever you get an exhaust ticket you have a "get out of jail free" card once you go to court.

Also for the stockish look and good performance the Tanabe Medallion Concept G, noboy considers it but for the prices it is sold at I think it is a steal given the expense of the Racing Beat Dual.

what happens to the sound when you add a dp and mp into the equation?? i just got the rb single and want a deep throaty sound; but am afraid the mp is going to open the exhaust sound to much. anyone running this kind of plumbing?

 

U have an HKS Super Dragger cat-back with a Magnaflow resonated midpipe, and it's not too loud. It's nice and throaty at idle, though to be fair, I haven't heard it at full song yet.

 

DP doesn't add that much. Inside the car you hear the turbo whirl but from outside not much.

MP usually makes the exhaust alot more raspy, if you want the deeper sound go with a highflowcat or at least a muffler welded into the midpipe section.

And I'd also like to congratulate on a **** poor job to those with a skeptical view of the concept that I'm no older than a pubescent child who just got his first car. I'm in the US Navy serving as a Corpsman for the US Marines so I'm sure I don't have to go on about what age really means.

Furthermore, whoever posted after me saying they wanted a LOUD exhaust was by no means any of which I wanted. As many have said, and in which I agreed, the mellow tone was more of which I was looking into. I am currently looking into the Racing Beat Dual exhaust and am pretty interested into it.

To answer your question Gracer7-rx7, my goals into my car is performance over cosmetics. I'm not sure if I could be any clearer as this is my second time repeating myself. However, in the same sense of having a great performance level, I'm not planning on driving a car that would more than likely be in the same comparison level in sound as my lawn mower. I don't want a coffee can exhaust, I don't want any "GT-wing" on my rex, I haven't touched any of the body, nor have I even thought about getting that part of the car done for a really long time; so do me a favor and take that skepticism of me being a "yet again, another ricer" out the window.

 

Just have someby fix up a full 3" exhaust (also in the silencer). Equal diameter provides a constant pulse in the eaxhaust. the bigger the diameter, the bigger the pulse, the louder it will be.

if you wany low noise and high flow, have a dual 60mm piping made with duual 60mm silencer and no large tips.

It's in Japanese, but it's pretty easy to navigate with the exhaust names.
I personally like the sound of the RE-Amemiya Twin Dolphin Tail and the Knightsports 800Ti, but I know these exhausts go for a lot of money.

The RB Dual-Tip is always a good choice too because it retain the stock look and you get less attention from the cops.

 

im running Trust PE-Ti (Greddy titanium racing) catback and it sounds pretty nice very deep and it does boost the performance!
