exhaust soot

can someone recommend a "safe" cleaner to remove the exhaust soot from my bumber and taillights. I bought simple green which someone recommended but now i hear that it is not good for the paint. What about bug and tar remover?

I thought there was a thread regarding the "safeness" of simple green. Basically, an experiment was done and it was noted that simple green corrodes aluminum.

Not saying that SG wouldn't be safe on paint - but the damn stuff eats aluminum!!!

Can't you use plain old car wash soap with a wash mitt? Wouldn't a commercial cleaner strip off wax from your bumper? It's not like road tar requiring serious rubbing.

I agree with Toadman, however, sometimes it's easier to use something else.

Yes, Bug & Tar Remover will work, however you should use it before washing your car. Get all the soot off the back, then wash the entire car. That Bug & Tar remover leaves an odd shine if you do it after washing the car..
