exhaust question
exhaust question
my exhaust is like white what does that mean.. some guy told me my car is running lean right now? is that true? not the whole things white its just a lil bit... and he thinks i should put higher octante in so it can become black again and not b so lean...
It could be any number of things, but it does not mean your car is running lean. You cannot judge a/f ratios by the exhaust pipe tip, just like you can't by examining spark plugs in a car.
actually im not talking about it smoking my exhaust is like white.. well not white it looks like my exhaust is like gonna give out on me or something... looks like when u lit up the charcoal it turns white and turns into ashes... i'll take pix tomorrow for more info...

The only portion of the spark plug that can give you any indication of the a/f mixture (and even then, only full throttle) is the bottom of the porcelain insulator. And the only way you can get a true reading is to do a "plug chop", meaning you must run at full throttle for extended periods, then chop (shut off) the throttle and stop the engine.
White deposits could be anything; water in the fuel, leaking coolant into the combustion chamber, fuel additives, etc.
Of course, your spark plug can tell you if you're running lean on an FD by having a bunch of metal deposits all over and serious melting of the electrode...but by then, you will have already known by other means that you were running lean...

the inside of your pipe being white is perfectly normal and as kento said, it is a very poor indication of your engine A/F ratio...most properly tuned engines will have a white color to the exhaust pipe with a slight ring of sute right at the tip. and as for your friend who reccomended you run higher octane to richen up your A/F ratio; no longer listen to anything he has to say, octane is simply put a fuels resistance to uncontrolled ignition or its instability..thats it.
White?? Men, that is bad.. Must be a bad coolant
White can be any number of things....
1) coolant. check for champane bubbles in the coolant or see if the car exhaust smells sweet.
2) could just be normal rotary exhaust. Especially if you're not running a cat.
3) my turbo was leaking oil down into the manifold and caused a WHITE gas vapor out the exhaust. Generally oil burns blueish but this oil didn't. You could smell that it was burning oil though.
4) could be running rich. when i first got my car with the pfc on, it would almost burn your eyes it was running so rich on the base map.
I'm sure there's much more.
